sad day for me but good too....

Post by mohawk miss »

Some of you know that a great proportion of my last 40 or so years was spent showing and training horses, and that I still keep one even though I would seriously struggle to ride these days.

My only nephew just lost his 4 week old son, so he asked me if he could take my girl "for a bit", to help distract the other kids and himself. So I agreed, and today my 21 y.o. mare left for a new life in Orange, along with all her gear.

They love her already and I am happy that she will be spoiled and loved, and happy i'm not paying out $90 a month anymore ;) , but it really hit me hard a bit earlier that I have basically closed the door on a major part of my life, that I will probably never be able to revisit. Even though I didnt ride anymore, having Miz was kind of a denial that my riding days were over, and that I could just go back to it anytime I wanted.

Has this sort of thing happened to any of you guys? I found that my family didnt quite understand where I was coming from.
I used to have a handle on Life,
but it fell off.

Family mean well, but dont always understand because they have not experienced or value the same things in the same way.
Those experiences or "things/items or creatures" which mean the most to you, are part of you, and make you who you are.
You can not loose that, even though it might feel like it. Its not easy 8)
It all comes down to how you ride it.....

My mum went through a similar thing, perhaps not for the same reasons. As well as show jumping, 3 day eventing & point to point she also managed a riding school.

She has since taken to dog agility training and is doing well

Heart breaking stuff, I know how you're feeling regarding your horse. I gave up my boy a year and a half ago and the only comforting thing about it, like you, was knowing he went to a wonderful loving home but also that I knew where he was. Horses in one sense are like motorbikes, once they're in your blood they're always there. She will always be with you in your heart and at least you can keep tabs on her seeing that she's with family.

It's kind of like having your last child move out and go on his/her own. It's heart breaking but if you don't give up something else will come along. Best wishes to you.
