Help! Starting issues with my 253

Post by dutchy »

I've got a hx ute with a blue 253. The other day I went to turn it over to leave work and it just failed. Gave a bit of a click and that's all. Got the wife to come jump start me assuming the battery was farked and left it at that.

Went home (15 minute trip) and our of curiosity tried it again once I was in the driveway. Started, no issues......farker. Next morning got into it to go to work, started no issues. Worked, knocked off, failed again. Went to the local bloke and brought a new battery, put it in, still only clicking......CARNT!!

Took the new one out again to return it, put the old one back in and thought screw it, I'll try again. Started no issues with the old battery.

There had been another instance where jump starting had saved the day which is odd because replacing the battery with a new one dodd not fix the issue, unless the new one I got was nfg to begin with :(

Has anyone had a similar problem that they have solved and can tell me what the direct fault may be?, otherwise I'm going to assume it's my starter and I'm going to replace it...........after I try a battery from a different dealer perhaps.

Just had months of similar probs with the missus' car
Starter was rooted but it would be unusual to have clicking if your's was, more like a power problem.
Check starter relay, fusable links and connection to starter b4 buying a newey. (Check the Earth Wires!!)

Mine kept cutting out out recently, did all the forums, replaced coil - didn't fix, replaced ignition module, rotor and cap - didn't fix!
Turned out to be the Hall Effect Device inside the dizzy ffs!!

Can only think of a couple of problems.

Starter solenoid if no battery problems or loose wire/bad earth. try running another earth strap straight from battery to engine.

Have you changed anything. A friend had a ute that developed this sort of problem after having a radio fitted. Put a meter on it with everything turned off and there was still some current drain and it turned out that the radio never actually turned off.

Sounds like the starter motor is on the way out. Next time it won't start, tap the starter motor with a hammer a few times and see if it goes then.

Yep go the hammer trick, if it starts clicking try tapping the starter while trying to turn the engine over. If it starts cranking new starter. Although my old 253 starter lasted another 6mnths after a few hammer taps
Ended up replacing it only cause I was going on a road trip and didn't wanna get stuck 8)
anyone can go fast in a straight line,,,,

Thanks all for the assistance, now here's the run down.......

I checked all the leads/confections....... briefly. They all looked fine. I took the battery leads off and cleaned them out just in case. Measured the voltage over the battery and on a couple of other points on the leads to make sure they were connected and operating. They were all good.

I ended up getting the wife to grab a new starter motor which she picked up today. Went to remove the old one and noticed the nut holding the leads on was loose...................SHIT

All that effort and all it turned out to be was a loose connection. Don't I feel like a douche.
