We were always taught to get the fucker to make the correct ID as administering the wrong anti venom is as
bad as not having it at all!

Instinctively and if I didn't know better I would done what the father done to help his boy. However with the introduction of blood and urine tests that detect specific venoms, as well as a universal anti venom for emergency cases as mentioned above; there is no need to go predator and endanger another life in the process in order to identify a snake.
History taking is only partly essential for the treatment of snake bites. If the snake cannot be identified, venom identifcation is taking to long and the patient is symptomatic they get administered polyvate (universal).
That and the fact he forgot to mention the minor detail of an unidentified snake now residing under the bed.

Old farts like me are still operating on 80's information
Not sure how it works SA; in NSW kids that reside in areas considered populated with snakes are given education through the school they attend. As for the adults first aid courses, local community centres and the interwebz provide education.
as an aside my dad was bitten by a red belly and a brown (not at the same time) and survived without any antivenine...apparently made him very ill though.

Snakes don't always give a full shot of venom, sometimes none at all. It depends on the situation. baby snakes are the most dangerous as they have not learned how to control the amount of venom to administer. About 2 out of 10 snake bites are venomous. It sounds like a lot like the bitten man and his son were born and raised in Utah. When you take a Mormon fishing you always take two. If you take just one they drink all the beer. What do you call a smart Mormon?? An oxymoron. Take the middle m out of Mormon and you have??? Jim time.
Remember; He who howls at the moon probably eats shit and barks at girls. I actually like Mormons, they make me look smart.
