500 2 strokes
Re: 500 2 strokes
When I asked Wayne Gardiner recently what it was like to ride a 500 GP bike he said something along the lines of it was almost dangerous, it was either on or off and wanted to spit you off at a moments notice.

Tyre development would have come along way since then also...

I tend to agree with just about everyone,I miss them.I am nostalgic about them.Certainly rose coloured glasses here.
But i'm not too sure that they aren't viable any more.
If Evinrude can pass world emmisions standards with their E-Tec boat engines, them surely the Japanese manufacturers could even if they licenced the fuel injection system from evinrude or developed their own.

Re: 500 2 strokes
2 strokes bit the dust because it was becoming a two horse race.Honda and Yamaha.Over half the grid were Hondas.Ducati would not have come to Moto because they along with every other motocycle manufacturer didn't have the dosh to throw at developing a 500 two stroke that had no relevance to anything they sell or would ever build.
The switch to four strokes was also supposed to encourage independent race engine builders such as Cosworth and the like into Moto.It never eventuated and now we are at the cross roads again with the dumbest named catogory since CART was stillborn from Indy car.The CRT.

Moto2 might argue that last point as would CART based on cost go racing and popularitywebcase wrote:2 strokes bit the dust because it was becoming a two horse race.Honda and Yamaha.Over half the grid were Hondas.Ducati would not have come to Moto because they along with every other motocycle manufacturer didn't have the dosh to throw at developing a 500 two stroke that had no relevance to anything they sell or would ever build.

Re: 500 2 strokes
In one of my many magazines that I subscribe to, there is a two stroke that is being developed and tested that is clean and has a regular crankcase for lubricating oil only. They use direct injection of fuel to the cylinders and have electric blowers to scavange the cylinders, rather than using crankcase pressure as in the old two strokes. The blowers are not super chargers so an extreme amount of pressure is not needed, just enough to clean out the burn't gases when the piston is all the way down. I will post a URL when I find the stinky magazine I read it in. They claim it works and the picture, (it was a small v6) seemed very simple and small. Cheers. Re: 500 2 strokes
I think the Bimota V due shenanigans made motorcycle consumers a bit cautious about the injected 2 strokes? That was back in the 90's though. I think some of the MX development might be going back in that direction.
Re: 500 2 strokes
I would love a CR500, but I admit that's a lot different to a 4 cylinder GP machine.
I did used to love watching Doohan carve them up on the NSR back in the early nineties...

Re: 500 2 strokes
The original dream when they diced the 2 strokes from the main game (500cc) was that teams like Sauber (Formula 1) Cosworth , and Ilmor (who had a go with Garry Mcoy testing at one point) would come in and build the lot.Chassis, engines etc.A sort of Formula 1 on two wheels.Naked Twin wrote:Moto2 might argue that last point as would CART based on cost go racing and popularity
Your right Moto2 is part of the way there .Once they do away with the spec engine and open it up to all manufacturers it might carry a bit more cred.
As for CART.They are on their knees at the moment.Open wheel racing in the US is struggling big time due to the dragged out split from Indy car.NASCAR has filled the gap they left behind.

Re: 500 2 strokes
I've been lucky enough to ride a few different two stroke bikes over the years. Regardless of how "refined'' they ended up before they were deleted from the class, they are always going to be more of a handful than the four strokes. It's to do with the engine and how it works. It's near impossible to get four stroke usability with a two stroke.... thank god! I couldn't imagine a two stroke which felt like a four stroke. It's part of the allure of two strokes. the way the power comes in is unlike any four stroke.
i love riding two stroke dirt squirts. It's just a matter of pointing the front where you want to go and letting the back end swap ends like crazy

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?
