loved the two strocks and do miss them but these new four strocks have grown on me .

It was the start of the slow death of GP racing, when the mighty 500cc class was binned in favour of the 4-stroke boat anchors.

The only real racing engine for a motorcycle is a 2-stroke, we all know it. 4stroke fanbois are just all in denial !!!

The class back then was full of competitors, and a lot of the great racing was due to the eveness of the class. There were also full grids of up to 30 or more bikes.

These days - the premier class is a joke. 3 or 4 bikes only that are capable of winning, in a grid with sometimes only 15 or 16 starters, and often only a dozen finishers !!!!! The racing is a boring as batshit most of the time (note - sometimes it is good) - but you know the premier class has lost its glamour when the broadcasters focus on the battle between 7th and 8th because it is the *only* dice in the entire class !!

With both MotoGP and WSB owned by the same company - you can bet your tyre warmers that sooner or later the inevitable will occur, and the premier class will become a de-facto Superbike class, and WSB will cease to exist in its current format.

agree completely, give it 5 years and they'll merge, WSBK is kicking goals with more manufacturers and racers and motoGP is struggling to field double figures.

If you read the Stoner story.I kinda agree with him,
do these people running this have any idea what they are doing?to not allow the two strokes to race was crazy.To turn the Gp into some superbike race is bullshit,I reckon they'll end up losing all credability.
To turn your back on the whole two stroke development is fukd,they are essentially a better engine,with modern tech they'd be efficient and clean too.

No manufacturer can build big engined 2 strokes and meet the EU emissions targets, Mazda have stopped the rotary for the same reason, they are just not a long term prospect at the moment with the current emissions and technology. Do I miss the 500's yes but I also accept they have no and haven't for 30 years had any sort of resemblance to the road bike. Much of what comes out of Motocp now gets filtered down to the modern road bike, albeit if a far cheaper and cut down version.

I seriously doubt having 2 strokes would make the grids bigger, if anything if you look at moto2 the reverse has happened. The current format is far cheaper to run a team and with the CRT rules if they get closer to the gp bike in terms of lap speed I think you will find they also will increase the grid size, plenty want to try the CRT but not many believe they will work and like life no one wants to be first to fail.

Life evolves, I just see it as that and look forward to what they come up with.

and i thought that was me being cynical until i realised that moto2 bikes use a honda 600 engine, and what engine will moto3 use? a honda 250 single!

so why dont they call it motohonda?

and the world leading 2 smoke r&d place is here in australia (north queensland actually)

If the engine is lighter, has fewer moving parts and produces more power how is that not a better option???
Surely with gas recirculation and synthetics in engine oils along with Urea injection they can do something about the emmissions. 2 strokes should never have been tossed in the too hard bin.

But in reallity the 2 stroke zx10 is the ultimate. 250Hp 40kg less weight yes please

Who wants to wait you can buy there 1100 tripple motors some mad bastard should get one and shoehorn it in.

On the old hysoung forums i used to frequent, a guy on the used a 250 hyo frame and stuck a 500cc 2 stroke into it he has been riding it for a couple of years and the worst he has had was chains snap.

he said it scared him alot LOL

I miss the 500 2 strokes too, but I think it's more because of nostalgia than any technical reasons. It reminds me of days when I was younger.....and therefore faster, smarter, tougher, etc.
I keep hearing that the racing was closer, but I remember seeing Mick Doohan walking away with win after win...much like casey stoner is doing now , and Repsol Honda's dominated....hmmm
There definately were more bikes on the grid! But I think the GFC probably had a partial hand in the reduced numbers right now. Hopefully this will change next year with the new rules......I'm not holding my breath though.
Did you guys watch the "GP classics" that they re-ran on oneHD (I think thats where I saw it). Was really cool, but it did remind me that I do look back with rose coloured glasses a little bit.

I think you are spot on, it is what and how we want to remember them, not necessarily what it actually was
