Zx10r 2007 FI light not starting anymore

Was riding the zx10r and all of a sudden the FI light come on and flashing. About 1km down the road (lucikly able to find somewhere to stop) the dash went out as well as all lights and the bike felt like it didnt get any more fuel and stopped.
Anyone have any problems like this before? I have read might be a loose connection / pc3 probelm etc. Any ideas would be helpful ill see if i can check all cabels tonight.

forgot to mention, when i try to turn it on again it makes a rasping sound and doesnt kick over.

Where's the rasping sound come from... And what does rasping sound like?

coming from near the battery, I assume starter motor area (?) Sounds like it is being stopped from starting. I am not sure if there is anything in the bikes computer that stops it from being started if there are certain faults with some electronics. Could be the battery maybe, Im going to look into it in more depth in the next few days. Any reccomendations still very welcome

Hi Tim,

I hope I can help you.. I had this exact problem happen to one of the track bikes I re-built.. it was an 08 ZX10R but still pretty much the same electronics.

It sounds very much like a major electrical fail... But this doesn't have to mean a HUGE problem at this stage. You did mention that you had a PC-3..? Well the earth lead for the PC-3 will meet with all the other earth wires under the tank and is bolted to the frame there... you cant miss it. Now there are so many leads going to this 1 small bolt, plus the PC-3 lead. This little bolt has been known to work it's way loose and at times can fall out..

With my problem, the bike would start and idle ok, but once you started pushing it a bit, it would cut out, dash would go off, burp and fart..!! Come on again.. so when I pulled it all apart, I found this little bolt almost out completely, and all the wires where just barely touching each other.. so check this first for an easy possible fix... and also check the battery terminals, as a loose connection there will amount to the same feelings... It really needs a longer bolt..

I cant help either, other than to say ive been belting the living crap out of mine for 4yrs, and it aint missed a beat!!!!!

Just listened to your you tube vid and it sounds like that battery is totally dead..

Not even enough charge to engage the starter at all....

So you have to find the reason it is so dead.. Which I feel leads to a problem with the charging system on your bike..!!

If you can charge that battery back to full charge, then give it a kick and see if it will start..

If it turns over and starts, that will confirm that your charging system is gone..

Still not a huge problem, just new parts needed..!!

Maby the battery just kicked it in?
Try jump starting it and check the charging voltage.

I'm getting the battery checked at the moment. I'll know tomorrow. I guess the alternator or similar is rooted if that is the case.

got it charged, battery is fine. It was able to start up the bike. Now i am not sure if the alternator is broken becuase it may have died and not charging the barrey causing it to run low and not start the bike again.
Does anyone know if the 'FI' light flashes when the battery is not getting charged? I did fiddle around with a few plugs whenI took the battery off, maybe there was a loose wire or connection that got fixed.
Just dont want to be out riding 100km from home and it die again suddenly

Check the voltage at the battery while running, should be around 13 at idle and peak at 14.5 at about
4000-5000rpm if it's any higher then 15 then your regulators gone (overcharging can kill the battery to) if it's not about 12.5 at idle and doesn't fluctuate with revs then I'd be checking the stator.
I'm pretty shore you can check the resistance between the wires from the stator as a guide before pulling it right out. Photomike has had stator problems with his gumby, do a search for his thread
