NSW: More consistent speed limits, the good & bad

Post by mike-s »

as per this article (and a few links) there are some speed reviews coming into effect on Sydney Main roads in a staggered implimentation.

The first i'm aware of is King Georges Road and it's multiple personality disorder is going to basically be 60km/h from Hurstville ALLLL the way to Wiley (car)Park. Although the idea of more uniform limits is a good one, I have a deep seated skepticism about this, based purely on the (lack of) abilities of the majority of the people i see on the road. I will be the first to admit i'm only an ok driver and by no means perfect, but fark, some of the selfish crap that goes on out there is rediculous.

With the vicious speed enforcement we have here in Qld,(including unmarked permanent hidden camera on M1 that has earned government 7 million in fines in first two months of use) I find highway travel on motorways particularly tedious- 4 lanes doing roughly the same speed, takes ages to overtake and unnecessary lane changes more commonplace than I have noticed before. With the average lack of skill and lack of shoulderchecks prior to lanechanges, a great place to be on a bike....hmmmmmm :x

I thought they were doing away with the 50/70/&90 zones, & going back to 60/80/100???

I did too, but personally i hope they don't as 70 zones are almost all assured to go down to 60 :supz: instead of to 80. Ithink at least in the interim they are going to just stick with smoothening things out with more consistent speed limits, when really the only places that deserve 60's are the hilly bits of KGR near Hurstville, Bev Hills & MAYBE at Wiley Park.

Seen a similiar thing happen down here mate - they recently installed point-to-point cameras on the Federal Hwy between Goulburn & Canberra. Even though they only ping trucks for speeding - all the retards hit this stretch, immediately sit on 110 - and you end up with a fucking mobile car park all travelling within 1-2 kmh of each other, in both lanes, right next to each other. Overtaking is almost impossible, and quite frankly even in a car I find it dangerous. Nobody wants to go less than 110, and nobody is prepared to boot it up a bit just to get past and move over.

The problem is with point to point is you have no feedback as to the average you are doing it 's great for the revenue raisers but if you don,t know you are breakng the law how can you be fined ?? I only have a speedo on my bike not a computer

I am wondering if you have an accident within a short distance of a "safety camera" does it make the government liable. Afterall we are meant to be 110% safe with these cameras in place. That's their job isn't it, to make Mr and Mrs Doogooder all warm and fuzzy! Maybe a few court cases might convince them they arent worth it.

Speed zones never make sense. Out here in Penrith there are two main roads heading North-South. Mulgoa Rd/Castlereagh Rd which mostly goes through industrial areas with few side streets, no houses, no kids, and a dead straight perfect condition billiard smooth road. Of course it is a 60 zone all the way. Head over to The Northern Rd which goes past endless houses, Neapean Hospital, a school, countless side streets and is not in as good condition but it's a 70 zone. Where do the coppers sit.... of course in the 60 zone on Castlereagh Rd where there is absolutely nothing around. If that is anything to do with safety I will eat that 60 sign! :x I suppose at least they are consistent..... consistently stupid.

On a side note I dont speed anymore and havent been booked for it since 1999. Do the limit or a little under and you take away all their power. If you have to get up it wait for the twisties where they cant get a lock on you with the radar and there wont be a mobile camera. In the end going 10 to 20 over the limit only gets you there a couple of mins earlier but you risk loosing your licence and fines for it. Not worth it IMHO.

Technically it should make them liable but its like getting them to pay for a busted spring or something from a pot hole in one of their roads, its just not going to happen because they would have some legal loop hole to get out of it.Could you image the cost to them if they were found liable for every accident that occurs near their saftey cams ect. With those point to point cameras Gos mentions i have been told by rta inspectors that they will eventualy be used for other vechicles besides trucks in the near future,i would love to now the cost of instaling one of those eyesores i bet it isnt cheap

The point to point cameras on the Hume in Victoria will ping anyone. Fortunately there are far more entertaining ways to travel north than the Hume. We only use it to get to Broadford, and there's no way we'll break the limit with a Subaru 1800 towing a YZF600 and a Sprint ST
