nice rearsets. Ive just stripped my h1 550 down to the frame today as well. Ive got both the factory manual and the haynes manual if you need some info. More than happy to help out. Mine will also go the cafe look when i get it all together again. Z1 enterprises in NY have been gr8 and are realistically priced. rings and gasket kit= shipping were cheaper than anyone local.

Z1 are definitely up there bucause the sell braided brake lines in specific lengths with appropriate angled banjo fittings that will benefit when fitting clip ons.

If you'd like to wheel out one of those manuals I'd be most appreciative of fork oil capacities and valve clearance figures...?

To go with the aesthetics and to compliment the wrap on the exhaust I'm looking at using something like the grip tape used on tennis racquets instead of standard bar grips. is there any inherent problems with this in terms of the law? I cant see any problems and the end of the bars will of course be fitted with bar end mirrors so there wont be an open end to the bars.

Valve clearance is;
inlet =0.010-0.037 service limit is .120mm
exhaust .030-,057mm service limit =.140

hope this helps. Are you going to stick with the original carbs or go another make as it is near impossible to get new diaphrams if you get a pin hole in them. I got most of the paint off the rear rim but the paint doesnt want to let go and ive just heard that my fork tube has a crack in it near the front guard bolt holes/mounts. what are you going to do about the rear shock as they are not "rebuildable". i was considering getting a wilburs as my is leaking.

Carbs - another set on Ebay I'm winning. Please dont go bid on them LOL. I'll have 2 sets to mix and match. The diaphragms in mine look ok so if you need I'm willing to share surplus parts.
When Paint stripping the best way is to scour the surface first with rough steel wool so that the stripper can penetrate. With the bits that wont budge you may need to use elbow grease and more steel wool when its dry. Sifa rolls of steel wool are about $10 at Bunnings. Also use Motospray paint stripper as it has the strongest mix available. Cant remember what the active ingredient is but it has the most. Kwikstrip and spray strippers are ok but paint on jelly works better.
Forks - JB Weld if its only the guard mount.
Rear shock well I'm looking at deleting the Uni track set up and going to am more conventional mono shock set up. I like the look of the little braced swingarm but I am yet to investigate what other swing arms might fit in terms of width and chain offset. I will keep the original wheel size. Might need to find a fucked up frame to test out shock top mount position before commiting. The Wilburs looks good and is on par with Hagon ...Google Hagon Oz. Of course there is also scope for twin rear shocks....Like I said I have not really thought too hard about that area.

thanks for the welcome. i pulled the head and block off today. when i did a compression test it looked okay at no1 but went down hill rapidly after that. 100,60,62,70. surprisingly the head gasket came off rather easy, pity about the base gasket, thats another story. the head looked okay as did the pistons ( abit carboned but to be expected) all bores except no4 look good but no 4 is scored quite deep. lucky ive got a spare motor to scrounge parts off. going by the engine number the spare is a younger motor but the sump plug has been drilled to take a wire so this has me wondering about its previous life and whether it has seen much track time. was there a racing class for this size bike?
I looked at going the twin shocks for the looks but i like the idea of being a mono cafe/custom and the "heritage" of first mono roady for kawasaki, plus ive already ordered seals and bearings for it.
as for the carbies i wont be bidding as ive already spent enough on rebuild kits. but if these dont work out im keen to look at mikuni or kehin

If all goes well and I can make it work by deleting the Uni track then I'll use a near new Zx9 rear shock giving a bit more room for a smaller battery and battery box.
If you go done the re-bore path then for the same cost as a +.05 re-bore then you may as well go all the way and take the liners out to 615cc. Thats what I'm looking at.

the bore on the other motor is good so no issues there. what are you doing about the handle bars? sticking with the stock units or clip ons? i checked out the air balance tube set up and ours should be running at 10 psi

I have a MIG and there shall be no more air pressure and balance pipes. Just a brief zap to the 4mm hole atop the fork leg. Now that you have given the quantity of fluid then I can add a bit more to get the correct air gap and pressure.
Will be going for clip ons. Looked at clubmans but that necessitates adding mounts to the top triple. Clip ons are easier but steering stop requires modification - Easy.

i thought about welding it up but wondered about how it may affect the handling. was this an experiment or a gimmick by kwaka engineers to get one over the opposition?
speaking of the front end, are you going to do anything with the springs? spacers, replace?
