As far as wild cards, I guess you mean outsiders who are regular GP riders. I reckon Simoncelii n Divizioso are better chances than Ben. Even though I'd rather see Ben doing it.

According to visordown

Rumour: Rossi wants a Honda?

Rumours from Italy suggest Rossi is looking for an independent Honda team in 2012
Posted: 9 August 2011
by Visordown News

THE rumours have been spreading from Italy that Valentino Rossi wants an escape from the struggles at Ducati and a return to Honda.

The MotoGP holiday period has been awash with rumours that Rossi will relinquish his attempts at winning on a Ducati as the Italian has approached Honda for his own independent entry for 2012.

A possible scenario purported was a supposed swap deal between Rossi and Marco Simoncelli and Ducati to Gresini.

The Italian media sourced the information from the current factory Honda rider's - vocal - personal manager Carlo Pernat and the news was further fanned by former Gresini rider Marco Melandri, who said that Rossi had been in talks with Fausto Gresini about taking the factory-Honda place.

The question is whether Honda would have Rossi back, after leaving the manufacturer with bad-blood to move to Yamaha. However, HRC vice-president Shuhei Nakamoto said in 2009 that Honda would be happy to take him back. The other block for the switch back to a Honda would be whether Ducati would allow Rossi to end his two-year contract early.

As renowned journalist Dennis Noyes observed on Twitter crazier things have happened, he noted that no-one expected Eddie Lawson to go to Honda in the late 80s.

Will Rossi go? Probably not, there is a greater chance that this is a way to get Ducati to abandon the carbon chassis and get the changes he requires.

Why would Honda want Rossi? They have Casey doing really well, & will win the championship this year for them. I would say they might have him back, but with a huge pay cut, In fact I believe Rossi would have to bring some big money/sponsor into a team to get a start, or, they could dump one of their other contracted riders, maybe Simm? he has lost them a few points & podeoms, so look for who's contract is ending this year & that would be the man that would go. Again only IF Honda wanted Rossi,[which I think they dont] He has made a dill of himself this year, & shown just how good Casey was on the Ducati, so why would Honda want him? :?

Here is the definitive analysis of what's going wrong with Ducati. Make sure you have a large drink or a big mug of coffee because you'll need it. If you persevere to the end of this article you'll understand even better just why Rossi+Ducati hasn't worked and is not likely to.

Rossi is not talking directly to Honda but rather the Gresini team to run a bike through them so it is not really a question of talking to Honda so much as Gresini getting permission to run another bike or piss Simo off and take on Rossi which would hardly need Honda approval. Marco Melandri who is looking for ride next year due to Yamaha pulling the pin on WSBK was at the Gresine team HQ so has the inside info on Rossi approaching them as he was there when it happened (Marco has stated this publicly). Don't be surprised if Marco shows up in MotoGP next year.

There is also talk that Rossi wants to long term run his own team and could be looking to do so as a satellite team, with the new rules for next year he has several options (not necessarily good ones) and the perfect opportunity. He could still have JB working for him.
