2007 ZX6 Service

Post by StuMiller »

I gave the bike a wash on the weekend and noticed a small oil weep on the front of the engine, above the headers.

It's not dripping, but after a ride, it is far more obvious. I also noticed there looks to be a plastic "box" above this, not too sure if this is part of the airbox....

The bike is very nearly due for a service, so I might get the lot done.

Any ideas on where the oil weep may be coming from?

Also, before I bought it, some of the guys on here said there was a sort of "recall" on these models due to valve issues? Can anyone send me/put up a link for me to take to the dealer when servicing as I might get these checked.

Cheers!

I think you may have a warranty issue. These have had problems with oil leaks at the front of the engine. Tim on here had his done a while ago. He'll chime in shortly with an answer for you.

Some of the 07/08's had valve problems ie premature wearing of the buckets. Our tracky dropped a valve but in hindsight we should have got it checked more regularly. The best bet is to get them checked.

I have the identical weep
It's coming from the rocker cover gasket but I've been too bloody lazy to fix it, not a big problem, so it's
on the "when I can be bothered" pulling it all to bit's list ;)

Yup, needs the rocker cover gasket kit replaced.

Tell your kawasaki dealer it's an "authorised kawasaki repair" (recall except they don't tell anyone about it. Give them your VIN and they'll check if it applies for you and they should do it for free.

While they're doing it, pay them to check and adjust your valves and check the buckets for wear!

I just booked the bike in for a check up and a service. I quoted the issue that Kawasaki are aware of oil weep problems with this model and the dealer seemed very hesitant to accept this may be legitimate....I'll keep you posted.....
I will also ask them to check the valves etc.....it would be very handy if I can get an extract direct from Kawasaki on what VIN's are/were affected, just in case this workshop challenges the authorised repair aspect....

I've contacted Kawasaki Aus via their website (so it can be tracked) and lodged a Technical Enquiry, listed the issue and the VIN.
See what they come back with.....

Thanks for your help, I knew you lot would come in handy at some stage.. :D  :kuda:

Just been doing a little more research on this known issue with my bike, all the Kawasaki forums have this listed with the service bulletin request and a short spiel on the issue and the date it was broadcast:
"Just called up the nearby kawasaki dealer and confirmed. On November 7, 2008 Kawasaki initiated a recall for 07-08 ZX6R's for the leaking valve cover gasket. The service bulletin number is MC08-16. The only side note is that your ZX6R must show signs of a oil leakage in order to have the service done for free. This also covers ZX6R's that are out of warranty."

Seems as though I should be ok for a warranty repair. What are the chances they'll do an oil change and filter change for me too?

My z leaked there also a little.

My 04 zx10r did
And my 06 zx10r does.

I've never worried about it.
