World First - Girder R1.....what a weapon !!

Post by Gosling1 »

Today I had the immense pleasure of going for short strop on what is probably the only R1 in the world fitted with a girder front-end that works - and works really really well....remember, you read about it here first :D - an article in AMCN is on the way......

This is Laurie Smith's latest project, and is an improved version of the first girder front-end that he built for the CBR400/Blackbird hybrid.

Not sure what a girder front end is ?? here is a picture of a set of typical girder forks. A similar design was used on the Vincent 60 years ago....

Image

Laurie built a version of these forks for his hybrid track bike, but this version used the stock steering head and s/head bearings of the original frame. He then decided to knock up a complete front end for an R1. This involved cutting the entire steering head off the frame  , and replacing it with his own design.

I will copy that story across from CanberraRIDERS shortly.......in the meantime, here are some photos from todays most excellent strop out the back of Anarchy Road :kuda: :kuda:

Laurie looking very happy with his new ride......

Detail shot from the left, showing the massive new billet steering 'head' which has replaced the entire R1 steering head ...

Front view. Those girder blades are......chunkylicious !!

This bike was amazing to ride. It felt like a normal bike, but with some subtle differences and some massive ones. It had a really nice light feel about the steering, and it also had a self-centering affect when you came out of corners and straightened the bike up.....a bit hard to describe, but felt good. Under brakes - solid as. Laurie has built a small amount of 'dive' into the front-end under brakes - it is possible to have none at all - but you need a bit just so things feel 'normal' - but really, you could reef into the brakes hard without any loss of suspension travel or feel. *That* - felt a bit weird. The TTX Ohlins used, works very well......

Through corners ? - it was only a short 5-minute strop, but plenty of good corners in that 5 minutes ;) , and the bike behaved impecably through every corner. I wish I could have this bike for a whole day !! With some new Pirelli Corsa's fitted, there was no problem with the rubber - I got really comfortable on this bike within 30 seconds of climbing on board, and was comfortable with punting through this stretch at the same pace as the Barge........perhaps even a tad quicker ;)

It was amazing to think that you could do better than telescopic forks - but this girder front-end works. I am no *tester* by any stretch of the imagination, but in 5 minutes, well it convinced me that girder front ends can work.....

An absolute credit to Laurie's skills as a designer and builder. I can't wait to get this bike up to Wakefield Park for a decent strop, he will be up there this weekend but I have already committed to a weekend away on the piss for a 50th !! aaaah well , next time.....

wow, this is a weird one huh, looks ok, seems to work, but it doesn't look right. I think peoples perception of what front forks are & what they do, is not what you see here. Does that make it wrong? Does that mean it wont work? (I dont think so).
Its going to take a lot of 'PR' work to get it accepted into mainstream though.
Would love to have a go too :kuda:
Ofcourse its....... "black"

Having owned a BMW with Telelever front, I can understand Gos' excitement. :)

It may be closer to the Hossack type on the K1200 & K1300 Bimmers.

Great design and ingenuity to have it on a Sporty :)

Not *seems* to work - it works really well, and given a decent chance to strop this bike on a track, I have no doubt it would out-handle similar kit (ie your normal R1 fitted with forks) - no problem. There is *zero* stiction at max lean angles, there is no massive change in geometry under heavy braking, there are a heap of improvements over normal forks that are possible with this front end.

It may not fit your perception of what *looks* right - but thats just a perception really ... ;) - it definitely looks nothing like normal forks, inverted or not. Its just that telescopic suspension has been around so long, that most punters think it is the best option. It's not. Its good (it should be with >100 years of development behind it) - but its not the be-all and end-all. That is why alternative front-ends are always being developed by manufacturers, to try and get something without all the inherent disadvantages that telescopic forks have....

Not sure if there is any intention to take this into the mainstream - like most things that are out of left field, conservative punters are unlikely to embrace it........but give them a run with this girder front-end.........and I think they would be very surprised....it will be interesting to see what the AMCN test makes of this.

similar concept, but much different execution - and those Telelever fronts must work OK, even though they had to dress them up as 'normal' looking forks ! be the first to admit I have never ridden a Telelever bimmer, so no idea what they are like. The basic design of the Telelever though, is far closer to the Hossack front-end than the girder-fork style used on Laurie's R1....

it is a great design mate :kuda: - and the fact that it can work on an R1 - almost *straight out of the box* as it were, is just incredible really.......but a girder design is way different to a Hossack. The Hossack design uses 2 wishbones with the suspension unit compressed between them. It is almost identical to a car-style wishbone design, except turned through 90deg to work in a 'forward' direction, not at 90deg to the side like on a car.

Its not something you see every day of the week, thats for sure :kuda:

And don't forget that mainstream is not about 'the best' , it's about price and mass production. :(

Having watched (online from afar) this move from a wooden mock-up Laurie's work is amazing. To even envisage how to do this is a sign of his genius with suspensions.
