Is Facebook killing us?

Post by Glen »

It's something that's bugged me for a while. When I first joined KSRC it was a site where everyone posted stuff and talked about all sorts of shit. We got together for rides, shitted on about crap, posted what we were doing and what was happening in our lives. We felt like a fairly tight community.......now I think it's different. Facebook seems to have taken over as the prime method of communicating and I think as a community we've lost something.

I joined Facebook so I could get photos from Ray but in general I hate the thing. I think it has dumbed us down to the point where everyone thinks they have to share every boring little detail of every waking moment. It has, sadly I think replaced communities like KSRC with a mass medium where people communicate with anyone and everyone on a mass scale. Is it good or bad? For each individual I guess it's different but I think while it's obviously a great facility for mass communication it has slowly eroded the sense of community you get from organizations like ours.

I'm probably being a little unreasonable and maybe a little selfish, but I like what we had in KSRC and I think were losing it as a he'll of a lot of stuff seems to hit Facebook before here. Is it because most of our newer members are younger and therefore more attracted to Facebook etc? Am I too old and stuck in the dark ages? Probably.

What do you think?

Firstly, KSRC has a facebook page...official or not i dont know, but it has been dormant since Jan until someone mentioned that it was quiet...then it got 4-5 more posts...
Secondly, when you share something on here it is a lot more public than sharing it with your friends on facebook. This is why i think people tend to share things on there first rather than here, as that person would no doubt have the people he/she communicates with from here on their friends list. So there would be no need to post it up again.

Also, some forum based clubs/groups that i know have turned into a facebook orientated community and left behind their discussion forum, simply because it is easier, cheaper, and it self promotes through everyones friends list.

I dont think facebook is a mass medium, not for the everyday joe such as us, as you are limited to who is in your friends list and who wants to read your shit. God knows i got a few people "muted" from my friends list due to their "i have collected 4000 gypsy turds in farmville" shit that comes up on a daily basis.
Celebrities and whats happening in the media may be a different story. Today you have your Justin "i want to kill you slowly" Bever (or how ever the hell you spell it), facebook page purely for pormoting, not for creating a community. While 10 years ago you would of had the "Justin Assbandit Bever Forum" to create a community so desperate teenages could share their sex dreams.

Times are changing and some are embracing it, while others are keeping true to their roots. In the end i think mediums like these will fizzle out to give way to more mainstream online socialising technologies (10 -15 years). When i first started with a computer, there were things called BBS (Buletin Board Systems) which were things such as these but pure text, eventually those communities and boards gave way to more mainstream technologies, mIRC, ICQ, MSN, phpBB forums etc... Most adopted the new technologies, while others didnt and fizzled out along with their boards.

I joined FB and twitter - initially for work related news and connections which were going that way.
Then I got a little sucked in.
Now Twitter's for work, and FB keeps me in touch with people I'd otherwise miss by not getting to many events.

Yes I think much more is happening on FB, and less seems to be happening on KSRC - though not nothing. I check the forum more than I check FB.
Do the two equate? Maybe.
I also think that the slow down on KSRC (at least from my perspective) was due to some of the attitudes and problems that were building for a time - and are now largely gone/dissipated, but their effect is still felt. Might take a bit to recover from those threads as I think a number were turned away.

I get less time for KSRC these days (even less for FB) but I still log on and have a few pages of new posts to work through (only one today, cos I checked yesterday), I've noticed though that it's a different core set of active people. Maybe that's a notable difference too.

You are right Glen. Once upon a time I would have been starting a thread over here about Which Bike Will Mel Get Next.... now I am just spamming facebook with my thoughts on that.

And I'm sure every single person on my friends list loves seeing my dribble about which bike I am going to get next... and how many times a week I overeat on laksa... and snippets of whatever song happens to be stuck in my head... and any other random thought that happens to pass through my mind :) Youse do, right? :kuda:

But also it might just be 'change'? I think from when I joined KSRC in 2006 to even say 2008 or 2009 which is probably well before the mass facebook takeover KSRC had changed a fair bit?

Mel, Random thoughts are what make the world go around.
As to FB/Twitter, i joined the former as friends nagged the hell out of me to join up. Most still know that even if they send me an invite via FB they should sms/call or maybe even email me to make sure i got the invitation. Simply as i just do not check the thing. Also with the numerous updates that they have done to it, it has become an unweildy beast that promotes just inane shit (like you mentioned) rather than any useful thoughts or discussion.

Not just that, but my wifes friends both hassle me about when she is getting a FB account (thus far the answer is probably sticking with "never" as I have an account) and send any invites to me and then call/sms me when i haven't responded to the invite within a couple of weeks of it being sent out (i genuinely didn't know).

To me, aside from threads like the association thread, some bits of offtopic & the humor forum, for the most part forums are more structured, require more thought, structure and consideration of things like relevance rather than just opening your mouth and have absolute shit pour out.

To me it's basically like comparing the following two
Facebook & twitter

I may be a bit of a stick in the mud, but oh well. As to the BBS'es, to be honest they may have been an old technology, but they were an old technology that ran exclusively, to access ome of those you didn't have access to things like the internet and all the other systems and services.

I can't see the forum here fading anytime soon, but having said that i'm a member of a forum that used to have twice as much activity per-day as there was here, but now is a ghost of it's former self. Then again there were a couple of significant events that happened that were a catalyst for people to just up and go elsewhere as there were too many bad memories left behind (2 rider deaths in 3 months, the second on the way back from a memorial for the first). Then again i'm a member of a coupld of forums that have lived through the same kind of hard events and come out stronger for it. We've been relatively lucky here in that respect though (touches wood).

As to twitter, i just subscribe to a couple of interesting people and randomly check the updates once or twice a fortnight to see if there's anything interesting/funny.

KSRC is more focused , sure it has dropped a bit with face book , but it revolves around a "family" unit . I don't think it is going to die . There are people rarely visiting KSRC who aint on Face book at all . There is a natural drop out from KSRC (always has been) and sometimes facebook can keep you in touch .

Facebook is great for Rays photos , more instant sort of meaningless sheit . Staying in touch with far away friends who don't even know about KSRC . Being friends with my Kids is great for me on Farcebook , I can SPY  And they are not likely to see any crappy photos of my hairy arse here on KSRC .
And becoming friends with old time racers (racing when I was a kid and reading about them in CycleWorld) so I can look at photo's of ol stuff and learn about background stuff .
Nobody here has any idea of what my avatar pic is , but that got dug up through facebook ... Nobody here is interested .

I will continue checking in on both , and perhaps a dirt bike forum or 2 now .
Ummmm let me see

But I like letting everyone know that Im currently checking in whilst doing a turd

As my phone is my primary interwebs, internets, porn, email and ksrc viewer its been easier to log into the naziFB page using the iphone app thingy than to log into this site until now. I havent been able to upload pics direct from my phone and rely on the computers at work to properly read the site. Also this site for some reason times out from my phone if I login and it stalls or lags for more than 10 seconds. So up until now its been really frustrating but now the software has been upgraded by Dave#3 Ill try it and hopefully be on here a little more again. Also the last 6 weeks Ive feel like Ive been running a laundromat at home with so little time to find a computer to login

All in all its Hoffy's fault :kuda:

we couldnt say half the shit we say on here on facebook...

it'll kick back into gear, the club did go through a very intense period of motorcycling and gatherings, and that was never going to be sustained... i think when more rides and gatherings get going, hopefully everybody will talk about it on the forum...

relax old man, if you feel the need just create another ZRX love in thread and then watch the forum come to light

I think it is somewhat reducing what is posted in this club, ive noticed that very little goes on other than the constant flow of jokes and for sale items, other than that there hasnt been a decent ride posted here in well over 3 months...
