Bike hits 173km/h in suburban police chase
April 11, 2011 - 7:23AM

A hoon biker is counting the cost of trying to escape police after they spotted him travelling at more than double the speed limit and chased him through parts of Melbourne's outer east last night.

Police said the 31-year-old Brighton man was travelling at 140km/h in an 80km/h zone on Wellington Road, Rowville about 7.30pm when he sped past a highway patrol car.

But when police started following him sped up to 173km/h before turning in to Stud Road and then Ferntree Gully Road where he was caught by a waiting police car. (gotcha  )
Police said the pursuit went for about five kilometres with an average speed of 145km/h.

The man was expected to be charged on summons with offences including reckless conduct endangering life, evading police and dangerous driving.
His motorcycle, a GSX-R 600 Suzuki, was impounded under hoon legislation.

IIRC Wellington rd at 7.30pm on a Sunday night would be cold dark and very little traffic. (big 3 lanes)
Stud Rd may have a few, FTG rd bugga all traffic..

As always, he is a goose for doing it where it is easy to get caught, and staying on major roads

I think I may have heard that bike. I hear lots of bikes as I am in the Estate tucked in behind the corner of Stud and Wellington Rds. We get a lot of commuting traffic going into the hills up Wellington Rd. But the one I heard last night was really upping it. I thought to myself...god onya mate!!! :supz: Oddly, I never heard any sirens????????? :? They list speeds which I thought dictated an end of chase??? Isn't a chase supposed to be terminated if speeds become dangerous, or if the person being chased starts doing silly shit like driving on the wrong side of the road etc.,? Not that I want them to really stop chasing speeding motorists, as then my Sunday rides would be boring, but I just thought the operational rules dictated something along those lines??? :)

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?

HWP and their vehicles have no designated speed restrictions in Vic (so far) and besides that, it doesn't state the speeds that the police were doing. It also doesn't state that he was doing "silly shit"........other than the speeding that is.
I plan on living forever..............so far so good!!
