Unreliable - That I did not know about. I thought these were a very stable, true and tried technology over the years. My impression was that they might not have all the electronics as a space shuttle but they do the basics right? Apparently not hey?

Digging deep down what I'd want from my next bike (whenever that eventuates):

1. Must be ride-able everyday. So not a dirt bike or a hayabusa or a Moped!!!
2. Awesome sounding exhaust - (Akrapovic on a 250 sounds pretty ordinary)
3. A bit more power than my 250 but not super sport 600cc power. I find there isn't a middle ground between a 250 and 600cc super sport.

I thought, the harley ticked all the boxes except the handling bit.

The other thing that made me not so excited about Harleys is that I could never ride in the hills on one of them.

Thoughts?
HD's use quite old technology, the sportster engines vibrate like an electric massager on steroids, so much so that one of my friends 883 sportster broke the earth lug that earths the frame to the engine (note - the lug not the cable  )
Suspension is very old tech and on the sportster not much travel, doesnt stop super quick, heavy bike with a single disc front end (sportster).
Gutless, wont pull up some of the hills in top gear on the calder freeway between Bendigo and Melbourne (883 sportster, carby model, fuel injected versions are better)
You pay through the nose for old technology!
As I mentioned in a previous post, most of the jap cruisers, have better handling, better technology, more comfortable riding position, better reliability.
As an example of a cruiser that may suit you would be a Kawasaki VN900 Custom, handles better, not super powerful but enough get up and go for what you want, still sounds great with the right exhaust, and you could get a really nice example with low kms for less than $10k

Hope this answers some of your questions about HD sportsters

The worst is bug guts in your mouth. You know the deal, 40 degree day, visor cracked half an inch, big fat juicy bug explodes on chin piece, guts get sucked straight into your mouth. Pull up rapidly and throw up.

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?
