Why is it you think the only way to reduce the road toll is to control speeding? The point some of us have been making is it would be safe to increase the speed limits and still reduce the road toll if you prevented incompetent drivers from getting a license.Nosferatu wrote:We could all crap on for another 10 pages about how if the government was serious about reducing road tolls and speeding, then they would ban all cars with more than 50hp, fit the rest with electronic sensor governors so when they passed a speed limit sign the car would automatically slow down and not let you go above the posted speed
At no point have I claimed that police shouldn't be out there stopping dangerous driving. I would much prefer highway patrol be encouraged to use discretion like the rest of the force does and then concentrate on actions that put other drivers at (real) risk rather than concentrating on a perceived risk that the government has fooled them into believing. Instead they pour a large proportion of their resources into minor offenses that happen tens of thousands of times every day without incident and on their own are statistically insignificant in the road toll. The majority of the population would drive 10 to 15kph over the speed limit every day in some places without incident despite the government officials telling us it is the most dangerous thing you can possibly do. Is this telling us the majority of the population are criminals or that the speed limits in that area are set unrealistically low?
