Up-sell
Up-sell
So I'm riding to work today and all of a sudden something feels bad on the rear. A guy came up to me at the lights and said there was something sticking out of the tyre.. managed to get to work to find a full bolt head intact sticking out of rear. Lucky I have tyre insurance and got it towed to Peter Stevens for repair.
BTW ('09 ZX6R)
Anywho - Went to pick it up and was told in no particular order;
• you have a aftermarket pipe we suggest a dyno for $55 to make sure it isn't doing anything weird - my reply, it feels fine and if there was anything then I would have to buy a power commander.. reply - yes that is correct .. but it is a cheap special.. riiiiight
• We think you should install a trickle battery strap for $xx so that you can charge your battery as they are small. My reply, but it hasn't shown any signs of wear.. theirs, but it might soon .. aha
• We've noticed your brake fluid is changing colour and due for a flush. Are you serious? It has done 5,500kms, don't you cover it next service? No we change at 24,000 as Kawasaki recommends. But this isn't a corolla it is a sport bike which go through big heat changes, so we believe it should be done.
• Would you like us to change the front tyre as it is toast? What, it has 20-30% left in it... yeah but we don't recommend that. I said it can handle a few more rides before my 6000kms service.
Then I ride my bike out and stalled at the first light as someone has decided to adjust my clutch out by a good inch, when it was fine.
I came out feeling pretty pissed about the upsell - harmless as it was, I think my mind was being messed with implanting seeds of doubt about setup, condition of fluids etc.

Re: Up-sell
Nah at least they are taking the intiative to look over it.
You would be pissed if they just pumped through bikes without raising concerns.
As much as the up sell sucked balls I would rather that than not telling me anything at all.
At least now you are informed and can do it all yourself
.
- OEM ECU will adjust adjust the fueling it'self.
- Change the Brake fluid yourself
- Contact Red Dave (Mi Battery experts) for a trickle charger. Club Sponsor, good bloke and alot cheaper than the rest.
- Change the tyre when suits.
No Harm done. At least they took the time

Re: Up-sell
I have no problem naming names as they didn't do anything wrong - more like a performance review
Well - I had the guy on the ph trying to give the go ahead for all these options.. then when I got in I had another guy suggest a dyno - to which I can only presume that they are told to push that to each and everyone for extra dough.
I'm pretty pissed about the clutch though as after a ride after work it is still bugging me.. guess I'll just wind it back - but dang.
I'm not sold on the brake fluid as the reservoir is clean as a whistle - unless that doesn't circulate?

Re: Up-sell
Fuck, not sure what you're whingeing about. The clutch was probably adjusted as it needed it. The fact it is different in feel is just a getting used to it issue. To me, it sounds like even though the bike was in for a tyre repair, that they took the time to go over it and make sure it was operating correctly. All you have to do is say no FFS. Or would you rather them change the tyre, not inspect it, then have something fail and either strand you or cause an accident. I wish every service centre took this much care with bikes. Bloody hell, sounds like they are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't.

Re: Up-sell
Dunno sounds like they do it to all the bikes they get and probably make quite a bit of money out of it, pretty smart really. At least they were pro active. Id be pissed about the clutch especially if you only wanted the tyre done then that's what they should of done. Like others have said they could of said sweet F all

Re: Up-sell
Hey yeah totally see your points and I do appreciate them going over the bike for safety reasons. That would be totally relevant EXCEPT that what they suggested needs doing is 80% just to make $.
Trickle charger, dyno and even the front tyre are unnecessary right now.
The clutch was great and didn't need adjusting as the bike is 1 yr old, but hey yes that is fine to do if someone there thought it was in need of adjustment.
Conclusion - just found it interesting and harmless and I have a service booked in a few weeks there so be cool to get a follow up experience

Re: Up-sell
The other thing you have to contend with is that they have to cater for the lowest common denominator. Eg they fix the back tyre on a numpty's bike, he rides out, crashes, his insurance company knock his claim because he's got a worn front tyre so he goes back and has a crack at the bike shop for letting him out.
Remember these days nothing is our own fault any more, it's always someone else.
You always have the option to say No as you did but a least they've had a look over the bike.

Re: Up-sell
I think they should have informed you of these issues rather than framing them as a pure sales opportunity... The tone does sound a bit pushy but ultimately they did look over the bike for you.
