I would ave guessed it's something to do with cookie expiration or possibly with the server software (even something as simple as the webserver being restarted). Sometimes when i go from using one computer to another (i keep my profile logged in) i come back and my account is logged out & i have to log in again.
If it hurts, you aren't doing it right.

I had one of those too many failed attempts at log ins and I hadn't been trying, so I think there are some attempts being made.
