Trail riding is awesome fun! Challenges come in so many different ways from crossing rivers, climbing snotty hills, descending snotty hills, fanging flatout on some nice single trail, racing your mates on some 2 track and just getting back to the car when your 20kms past being completely knackered. All the while stopping for a breather on top of some hill with magic views or in a still rain forest valley in peace and quiet. I love it at least as much as road riding, maybe more.
My problem with roads these days are the cops. It is just so bloody difficult to enjoy yourself with the fun nazis using every technology to monitor you - and enjoying myself on the road is and has always been illegal, the trouble is that over the last decade/15yrs it has gone from inconvenient penalties up to license gone, to what it is now - $thousands, impound, hitch home, get your head shown on Herald Sun & Today Tonight as a serious miscreant here in Vic.
I have seen cops in the bush heaps but it is always the same - show us that your licensed and rego'd (even have a friendly chat) and off you go. None of this "mate I just had to scrape one of your type off the road last month and your all a pack of irresponsible lah blah blah" that you get from the HiGay Patrol.
As for the body damage the answer is to do it heaps and get good at it. My long time habit has been dirt winter / road summer.

Just one more law and everyone will be safe.

yes its more fun, the road is always changing, many challenging conditions and you can ride to your difficalty level, although having said that i would deffinatly say it is more dangerous , way more dangerous.... having grown up in the bush and getting my first dirt bike when i was 10 i have only ever crashed my dirt bikes ....never crashed on the road...my IT 490 scared me more than my 10 does thats for sure....
If you have it under control you don't have enough Power

Billy, I think he's only after motorcycle based examples matethe kid wrote:Stace has been up a few dirt tracks in his time .

Fwiw I ride a KLR 650 now as the authorities here in the Speed camera state decided that riding a sportsbike anything like a sportsbike is suppsed to be ridden was stupidly dangerous and against the law (latter part is kinda true I guess..) and did an off road course with HART 3 months ago, was good fun, learn a lot about body position and shit like that and it made me realise if I ever want to get good at riding dirt I got to get a shitload fitter.
It is different, it is fun and last but by no means least, no speed cameras hanging off the trees not that I speed on dirt anyways..
Andy, plenty of bush tracks easily available in and around Melbourne that you can ride.
A good mate will bail you out of jail, a true mate will be sitting in the cell next to you saying "Damn, we fucked up!!!"

Not fun when you come flying round a corner on dirt track & there is a 4WD coming the other way
& that was on a road bike heading into a rally
if I was on a chooky I would have been going twice as fast & probably not be here.

I'm taking the 'berg for its first run, since I blew the motor up, tomorrow. Should be interesting. We do a day/nighter, about 110km. Last year, one of the guys broke 9 ribs on this ride!!!
He's riding again this year.
