We are fine, high and dry. If our part of Mt Gravatt went under, the majority of Bne would be under! I spoke with Nanna today, as Phil said he is fine. Nanna's street was listed as likely to flood on the BCC's flood projection, so I was glad to hear that his home is dry! I was quite concerned about him and Sulli, especially after getting turned around at Oxley whenb driving today (as I hadn't been on the forum to read this thread).

Not sure if Ponti lives in the same place that I visited him in, but if so, it puts it into perspective as to how much water you guys have!

Yep, he is. The water was at the bottom of his street, you know where you hang a left to head up to the corner. He said another 1.5m and he would have had a swimming poo(l)

The flood rose so quickly most people were at work only to come home and be ordered to evacuate there was less than 24 hours

As a born and bred formerTamworthian what do you mean " Nothing exciting ever happens around here" You can always go and watch the mud dry on the hockey fields after the January floods and of course there is the annual cavalcade of ten gallon hats on five gallon heads AKA The Australasian Country Music Awards or you can go out to the Longyard and watch the paint dry on the Golden Guitar. Now you know one of the reasons I left the place. Every January we had a flood which usually cleaned up the campers at Jewrey Street and sent them scuttling up to the lookout.

I spent the day emptying out old houses in Rocklea. Both were 2 story houses, and the first was used by 3 students. They had no insurance, they lost everything but what they were wearing, and the house is highly unlikely to ever be inhabited again as the roof had collapsed so they need to find somewhere to live.
2nd was a house inhabited by a family with 2 kids, they had 2 cars on the property they hadn't been able to save, they came home while we were there, and the roof had collapsed throughout their whole house.. they were saying don't throw this out, or that.. but it was electrical stuff that couldn't be salvaged, don't think they understood. Both houses had been completely submerged, the 2nd one had a pallet, piece of timber and a car wheel on the roof.
But the main thing is the mud, it's so thick and it sticks to everything and by god does it stink. I even have it under my toe nails, and it's septic, so you have to be really careful if you cut yourself.
The most surreal thing was when I was standing in the students house I turned on the tap in the kitchen, the roof had fallen down, everything was caked in brown muck, it stank, and clear pure water came out of the tap.
We had so many volunteers, we were constantly offered water, muffins, sandwiches, there was a sausage sizzle, and people were coming up all the time asking if they could help. Now if only it was legal to do something to the goddam rubberneckers..

So after seeing this first hand, if you haven't already and can afford to please, please donate.. so many people have absolutely nothing (one of the students had one pair of shoes - and these we they to dig out of the mud) While we were at the salvation army depot people where wandering in, they had no food, no more clothes, and their houses were destroyed. They said they simply didn't get enough warning to save anything as their area's were the first hit..
What you see on the news is nothing, it's so much bigger, and it's so much rawer than that.

The people we helped today don't live in flash houses near the river, it's a poor suburb, mother nature doesn't discriminate.

Hi Bob.re read the forum it was Seiko who quoted nothing exciting happens around here ,meaning S A .But any way its all happening here at moment with the boot scooters,went for wander today around town and geez there a fair few weirdos getting around know days but a lot off the women are still looking good though .See your coping the floods over there to,hope you stayed dry through all this,it doesnt look the best thing to have happen to anyone.cheers garry

Hit the nail on the head there ,a lot of us dont realise how bad it really is especially the mud that is left behind,it propably wouldnt feel as devastating than what it is if it wasnt for the mud and the mess it leaves ,and dont worry we are donating but wish we could get up there and help

What a week !.

We were sent home from work 10am tuesday & only just made it before Ipswich motorway was closed by the Storm that trashed the toowomba area. Started packing a bag as soon as i got home. Tossed the Crim @ the Waki in the Tax pak (Hi ace Maxi) & parked them beside the Motorway overpass (Tuesday night). Lifted everything in the shed (3.5 foot lower then the house), Broke my mobile phone moving the Mig welder into the garden shed which is 3 foot higher then the main garage, spent all day wednesday without power with the generator rocking the street while we lifted all the unreplaceables into the roof. The waiting for the next high water mark was excrutiating. Sat on the guard rail over the creek/drain crossing at the end of street from 2am - 4am thursday morning until the murky brown mess stopped rising.
Then somehow couldnt sleep feeling guilty that all these poor other buggars lost the lot & my street didnt even get damp. We could fish for Euro carp from the road verge but thats more of a novelty then an inconvenience.
Anyway Friday I went down to the ST Ives GOODNA shopping center A friend owns what was a pet shop there, poor bugger, water to the roof everything tossed around inside the place. Nothing like getting sunburn around your Nakano signed baseball hat while trying not to slip over in flood mud mixed with a coupla ton of wet bird seed & dog biscuits.

Anyway .... condolences to those who have been unfortunate enough to have lost someone. The rest of this is just a big arse inconvenience that QLD will endure & overcome.

well saturday was clean up day its hard work and most home owners are still in shock and disbelief as Tanya said the smell is everywhere there is silt.
My wife and daughter went to help on of her school-friends there were thousands of people ready to lend a hand and were arriving by the busload trucks and drivers gave freely of their time bobcat operators worked tirelessly to remove the sodden mess that was once a prized furnishing or appliance the clean up will possibly go on for a long time.

Been down there cleaning up again today. Very Ugly. The streets still look pretty much the same today as in Sulli's pics. As a point of reference, the water got to the bottom of the awning of the first national building (my mother inlaws work) in the second last pic. Look accross the road and you can see the brown stain on the trees.

But atleast now it's a case of starting to rebuild in some way rather than rippping shit down and throwing away treasured items.
