My sister and niece are in Toowoomba - both cut off from everything and expecting the flood waters to come close to their place but not into it. Expecting the waters to recede tonight sometime. Hoping - just hoping at this stage.

Just heard from my mum, My cousin and his wife (plus kiddies) have a home near the Brisbane river. They've bee fortunate in that he's been able to come home from interstate in time for them to relocate some of their stuff. But with the upcoming king tide & all that, the odds are that they are going to loose everything that they couldn't move. :(

Lucky for us we're at Blue Mountain Heights. My yard still turned into a river yesterday though. Sod all soil left in the gardens, driveway's a mess. Got stuck at Mt Kynoch for about 90mins trying to come home yesterday arvo. I gotta say though, the footage on telly doesn't show the extent of the devastation properly. It looks like a nuke went off in there.

Just a fyi for those affected, there is a government income assistance for up to 13 weeks to assist those whom can't work due to the floods either directly/indirectly and can prove it.

link to original article
Flood assistance available

Monday, 10/01/2011

The Prime Minister has announced income assistance for people affected by flooding and extreme weather events across Australia.

The Disaster Income Recovery Subsidy is to assist people who are not able to make their usual income because of flooding.

Prime Minister Gillard says eligible applicants may include a farmer who is not earning the ordinary income because they can't get produce to market, or a truck driver who has been stood down because the mine isn't operating.

The income support is at the same rate as Newstart for a 13 week period.

And while the eligibility income test for Newstart does apply for The Disaster Income Recovery Subsidy, the asset test does not.

The payments are available for people in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

Ms Gillard says while that may seem like a lot of states, it's because extreme weather events have been seen in many parts of the country.

Successful applicants will need to show that they've lost income and are eligible for payment.

For further inquiries call 180 22 66.
Hope this helps some of those affected. If you know someone affected the please let them know about this as it may help make life a bit easier.

I'm originally from Toowomba and still have a lot of friends and family up there. These are some pics taken by a mate on Monday afternoon. Pretty shocking stuff.
