Well Mr Wattie, I would say that the volume of your iPod should be at the level where you can not hear the car but low enough so you can hear your bones breaking when it hits you.

in my previous experience, i have found it vital to have it low enough that when the road captain yells "remember the blind right hander" at me, i hear it.
2 years in a row, i didnt hear him.
makes for a bit of a laugh over the evenings beverages.
