Iphone or Android

Post by photomike666 »

OK so it's time to upgrade the mobile.

Choices
16Gb iPhone - 3Mp camera 3.5" 960 * 640 screen, 16Gb not memory slot
Samsung Galaxy S - 5MP camera, 4" screen, 16 Gb and card slot
Nokia N8 - 12MP camera with HD, free navigation, 3.5" 640 x360 screen, 16Gb and card slot

3 similar phones, similar price plans (iPhone is most expensive) 3 very different operating systems.

So, based on gadgets, available applications, usibility and future upgrades (Android 2.2 released shortly), and the growing trend of open source Android apps, which is the phone to go with?

I have no idea about phones, other than I just went thru the same thing.
Got a good deal on Garmin Asus A50 android, bought outright for $199, no contract which also meant I got 2 months free from Virgin so I stayed with them, so that covers 1/2 the cost of the phone.
They also upped there $29 cap to $300 of calls and now upped it to $450..

Heaps of info on Whirlpool..

I have the Galaxy S and I have to say it ROCKS! The screen is FANTASTIC! And if I don't have the Wi-Fi on 24/7 the battery lasts me 2 days straight... when I compare it to my gf's iPhone4 that will last a whole day when the stars are properly aligned I feel like pointing and laughing. Also, even if you use your phone heaps, every phone allows you to get a spare battery (I got 2 and a wall charger for them for $39 from ebay) and you can add more memory to them. Except the iphone that is. My Galaxy came with the standard 16Gb and I bought a 32Gb card for it, so now it has 48Gb. You may think you don't need a lot of memory but that's just till you start shooting videos with it. Hi-def take a HEAP of memory.

My phone also has free navigation and to be honest it works a TREAT! It didn't at first cause I didn't know how to use it properly... but now it rocks. Cold starts take less than 10sec! Even my car one takes longer...

There's also a free app for the Galaxy that allows you to more than double its processing speed, it's a MUST on the Galaxy S if you want it to perform well. (Let me know if you get it and I'll look it up for you). You can also find thousands of paid apps (from the Adroid market) free online.

Oh, and I still haven't tried the Adroid 2.2 but it's supposed to be even better... it even includes java which the Apple already said the iphone4 will never have.

The N8 is supposed to be a good phone but I've never played with it so I can't really comment... I've always been a massive Nokia fan but their smartphones were never that good. The N8 is supposed to have changed that.

Ahhh I just finished an hour long discussion with work mates on this. Personal favorite, Android. Open source means no money hungry corporation to ban your apps from the market...and froyo (2.2) has been out for a while, next one due is 3.0 and rumour is that it will come out with support for the new dual core 2ghz processors. Fastest processor for phones in the planet.

I could talk your ear off on this, and can't bring myself to typing it all out , if you want pm me and ill give you my number

After the abysmal failure that has been the last 2 years of Nokia phones, I'd say you'd want to be looking at a bloody big turn around to justify buying one if you are in the smart phone market.

I don't own a Galaxy S, but would say it's the phone of the moment if you can get one. The other option in the Android market is the HTC Desire HD.

Yeah, I looked at the Desire, but the company I'm with doesn't do them and I'm looking at contract rather than buyng outright. I'll look to see if I can find many apps for the N8 (I like the 12 Mp camera), and decide between that and the Galaxy S. I think the iPhone is out the window

I have the Samsung Galaxy S. Its a great phone and keeps getting better......

Make sure you upgrade it to Froyo 2.2 straight off the bat. It is available and makes a vast improvement on 2.1.

Anything android with 2.2 will keep you happy. Just like a PC, what you put on it will determine how it runs.

Going through the same process - old Nokia turned into an aquarium with the rain this week.

Personally I think I'll be going with the Asus Garmin A50 too....looks like it's got what I need :)

HTC desire froyo 2.2, great screen res, camera not the best you can get but does a good job of taking them, resizing and autoloading to pohotobucket which is very sweet for loading to the webpages. Plenty of apps, I use mine for 98% of the time for all my internet needs (1GB plan), maps, photos and weather when I am riding etc

I have an iPhone 3GS (I know it's not the iPhone 4) and found a neat little trick with it to keep the battery going for a little longer than normal. My place is on the cusp of where the 3G wants to be on the phone or not be on the phone, so the battery was draining in about 2.5 days. I have disabled the 3G (you only need it when playing with data intensive things, and it's easy to enable/disable) and the battery has lasted me the better part of the week. Might be something to suggest to your gf to see if it works on the 4 as well... ;-)
