crashes & lessons learnt

Post by Amir »

I was out for a nice ride. Lost control of my zx2r around a bend in our street. i fell off on the side of the road (lucky).
Result: broken indicator, faliure of speedometer and a small crack and scratches on the left fairing.

Lesson: don't push it too hard on cold tyres, respect all the corners and bends ( 1 lesson down another 1000 to go)!!!

The purspose of sharing this experience is so other riders can use it, I would love to hear from other riders abt their experiences, crashes and near misses and the lessons that they hv learned, so hopefully others can learn from them

I hope that no1 has ever had bad experiences from riding, bt if u have lets share it here nd learn from each other :)

Stay safe

Hey Amir, do you know exactly why you crashed? Can you put it into words?

I posted about this about 3-4 weeks ago! Should have learnt from me  My tyres were quite cold, hence why i sent the bike down the road approximately 1m out of my drive way.
Cold road, cold tyres, 171 HP

crash knobs were my saviour. Some lower fairing damage, but it was already damaaged from rolling off stand a few times. Only real damage was where my hand came off the right handle bar. My gloves knuckles came into contact with the top part of the fairing and snaped it clean into 4 pieces. Now epoxy glued back together. Not as pretty as it once was, but these things happen sooner or later

I was too fast around the bend. i went for the lean around the corner bt couldnt lean for some reason. I still had time to control it or at least slow down abit but i dunno it was wierd!!! i was only thinking abt the crash itself nd how will things mite end up after!! SO kept going straight ahead until i hit the kerb, I and the bike ended up sliding on the side of the road.

When i got on my bike to go for the ride, i was abit high!! i just wanted to get on the bike and go fast to reward mysef for finishing my VCE exams hahaha wat a reward!!!

Short answer: I was a little over excited about the ride, wasn't thinking much abt the safety...

I am working on my bike tomorrow...

I left some friends one night not long after buying my zx9 and did exactly the same thing. Bike slid about 10 meters up the road. Heart breaking to say the least. Has made me slow down but also wait until everything is up to the task rider included.

Funny how I never had that issue on my Hyosung

Cool thanks for letting us know Amir.

I've only got your interests in mind here mate, I suggest why you crashed is that you have very little skills or knowledge about riding motorbikes, and for your sake and that of those around you you really need to calm that teenage energy and develop some good habits.

Rider training is the number one thing you could do.... In liew of that here' a couple of basics to work on!

1. Start with looking where you want your bike to go in the corner, always, no matter what happens or how scared you get or what goes through your head, look where you want to go.

Your eyes are going to want to look at other things like the bike in front of you, or the curb, or the car coming, or a pothole but keep looking where you want to go. You'll go where your eyes are looking.

2. If it's dry and your bike is in good nick and your tyres are inflated correctly your bike will stick to the road at a lot higher speed that you think. If you find yourself uncomfortable in a corner trust that it's gonna hold the road and keep going through the corner. Once you tip in do not grab the brakes in a corner, hold that throttle or at least coast through the corner, following rule 1. Grabbing brakes equals standing the bike up and going off the road.

Hope that little bit helps. Think and talk and read about riding as much as you can. It can be so much fun if you do it properly, and it can be dangerous and confusing if you do it wrong or go outside your skill level.

Tim.

So cold tyres are a factor, what sort of "legal"speeds and time does it take to start pushing and testing that grip on the twisties. I've oftened wondered if it's just a few k's at 80-100kph or is it much longer...anyone enlighten me?

Tim.[/quote] good pick up tim, as I was reading this it's exactly what I thought was going on
Amir this is very hard when panic stations kick in but tim is giving you great advise & once you do look "where you want to go" you will be amazed how much you will be able to lean & turn your bike, good luck

I had a similar experience back on my L's when i rode my zxr250, went way too fast into a 90 degree left hand corner; came out of the corner heading straight to a medium strip managed to wiggle myself away from it pheeeeewwwwwwww. Then i went out and bought a book about riding and studied the cornering section. It was written by some dude from the Californian super bike school, cant remember the name but it was a great book just a shame that my mate "borrowed" it.

As Tim said go do a rider training course :D
