Indicator Mod question

Post by seraph »

Hi, I was wondering a couple things about the indicators on my ZZR250. After my painted cover was pilfered ( !!@&#^%@#!!!) I have decided that my bike would be much prettier if I rewired the indicators to the original position in the fairings + removed the side mounted ones. They will be 300mm (give or take) centre to centre. Is this legal, is this a modification, will it affect my insurance / roadworthy / warranty?

Also, how hard is it to do? Can I do it myself with a little advice from this forum  or should I ask the good folks at midtown to do it for me :?:

i think there was another question about this exact same thing on this forum recently.

From memory, just remove the paint from the indicators (very carefully & gently), reroute the wiring, and put in any electrical doodads (bulb holders) that are missing from the onboard indicators.

there was more that was said, search for it if your unsure about what i just said :)

i rewired mine on the gpx. They are not 300mm, so it classified as not road worth.

Insurance might pick on it if something happens.

G'day J, don't know about the warranty for sure, but I can't see how it would affect it.( Unless you wire it dodgy and your baby bursts into flames :P :P  ) That joke was in poor taste, sorry. Anyway to avoid any possible warranty issues (see above) I could give you a hand, and maybe some parts(see trackdays), with your mod. I'll be at the BBQ on sat. (minus my bike   ) so maybe we'll catch up then.

I'm going to make a couple calls to my insurance and to my warranty people to see how it lies. Then, all things peachy, I'm going to start modding my bike - yay!! I feel like a *real* motorcyclist!! :supz:

I am pretty sure that the first year in Australia (1990?) had these indicators from the factory. 1991 on didn't. Looks heaps better. Must be more aerodynamic too..... :D

Here is what I believe to be true:

The ZZR indicators did not comply with ADR regs, not far enough apart, that is why oz ended upwith the stalk mount indicators.

Think of it this way. Anything that is different about a bike or car in any country will almost always be due to local compliance regulations.

So, if you choose ot modify this it will be "illegal". However, you would have to be very unlucky to ever get picked up for that.

RAR!! I spoke to Tony from Midtown this morning (servicey goodness) who said he was happy to roadworthy my bike if I switched the indicators back to their original spots, assuming his tape measure agreed. He argued that the imports have them on the fairings rather than side mounted, so that must mean they comply + are roadworthy, but he'll look into the legalities today. Seemed to agree that centre to centre (I'm in the building industry - the only way to measure! ) was a valid method of measuring the distance between the indicators - wahey! This means my warranty + insurance + roadworthy will still be peachy creamy.

Now, does any one know the legal issues with modding my muffler into a 2 into 1?
