Carbon/Kevlar fairing.

Post by CairnsZXR »

ok so i bought the 9, now it seems i can't NOT modify it, so i'm going to be doing a full carbon/kevlar fairing and paint it as original except all black and grey strips will show the fairing for what it is.the ductail is all black but i'll paint it the same colour as the rest except for a couple of lines to show the work. i know its a big job but i like a challenge.

that is partly the reason i feel i have to do this. i'm also exploring the option of carbon heel guards, hugger , undertail and full carbon airbox assembly. i draw the line at structural parts like sub frame, rims but i am keen to get this going. just gotta get all the parts for the moulds.

I'd be interested in seeing how you actually go about making the moulds, laying up the carbon, vacuum bagging etc as I have some knowledge of the processes but it's always different in practice, although my engine covers did turn out ok for a first timer. I'm thinking of also making some carbon race fairings, front guard and a one piece seat fairing (using foam pad instead of the seat - taking the mould will be the difficult bit :? ) and maybe a tank

As the race fairings are only in two pieces (top and belly pan) taking the mould may prove difficult and may have to use a splitter plate and maybe reinforce the mould with some pieces of wood or similar (which could also be used to attach a brace to so I can secure it when laying up the carbon??). In regards to laying up the carbon, will you just let it "stick up" over the edge of the mould and trim/sand it later? Where did you get your product from and what brand of epoxy etc are you using, I was thinking of using West Systems from either Carbon Fiber Australia or Alt Composites
