It's the greatest load of frogshit to ever get regurgitated on bike forums anywhere in the Universe.
Here are a couple of reasons why.....
#1 - Cars have rubber tyres - so do bikes. Where is the greater danger of a static electricity discharge because you are riding a bike ?
#2 - Anti-static straps ....what are they made of ? Rubber. Same things on the soles of the shoes you wear..
which leads me to #3. As soon as you stop the bike, you PUT YOUR F'N FEET DOWN !! Those same feet hitting the deck with rubber soles.....like an anti-static strap dragging along the ground......
#4 - Who leaves their gloves on when they grab the petrol hose ? Who takes them off first ? Does it make any appreciable difference if you ground yourself by putting your feet down first, or grabbing the fuel hose first, or should you do this bare-handed, or maybe leave your gloves on ??? OMFG I am going to die a fiery death because I * sat on my bike* and filled the tank .....
Nothing could be further from the truth. IN fact, there has not been ONE SINGLE DOCUMENTED DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY - every recorded, from a biker sitting on his bike to fill his tank - Understand this. Not One.
But I have cleared several rooms and lit up the nightscape from lighting farts. This is much more dangerous and likely to happen, than my f'n bike exploding in flames from static electricity !!!!!.
Live On The Edge - fill your bike WHILE SEATED ! If you have never done anything as exciting as this, you may very well get a chubby from doing so.
