Static Eletricity at the Bowser

I'm filling up today minding my own business sitting on my bike and some guy comes up to me telling me how i shouldn't sit on the bike whilst filling it up as I may have static electricity from the bike which could cause an explosion. Then he went on to tell me how i should get off etc.

I wasn't in the mood for an argument so i just looked at him and walked off to pay.

Seeing as everyone I know sits on their bike when filling it up to get more juice in I thought i'd ask is there any truth in this or was this person talking out his ass. I figure if i do have any static it will be discharged when i touch the bowser and i don't see how getting off the bike is going to ground me through my rubber soled boots which are touching the ground anyway....

technically he's right. your are supposed to have bike on stand while re fueling.

but then again, mythbusters busted the whole mobile phone thing aswell, and its still law.

Funny, i dont know anyone who fills their bike up while sitting on it.

You may get more juice in but it can also overflow come out the breather & get dumped in front of your rear tyre = not very cool

Doesn't make much sense to me. You sit on it so you can fit more in it whilst it's upright, then put it on it's stand, leaning over, whilst you go and pay?

Ok so sitting on the bike is against the law but is it true what he said about static electricity....Maybe he meant a discharge from the bike where the side stand would ground it...

I would like to know as im not keen on blowing myself up or anyone else for that matter

i was filling the car one windy day there was a flame erupt and a metre long fire coming out of he car petrol filler

I always thought that the best way of reducing the risk is while holding the hose you touch the tank with your hand. Only vid i've seen of someone getting a fire in their car is when they left the thing to fill, went into their car to get something (i mean right in the car, not just popping their head in) going back to the pump and blammo, Had they simply put their hand on the door as they left the car again it would have earthed them out and it would never have happened.

Even if it was a stray fart you lit (a fart belonging to another), you igniting farts is a deliberate action. To make a justified comparison one would have to light a match and throw it in the petrol tank.
