Pillioning and Kid's?

Post by Disco »

Hey Guy's,

After getting home last sunday after a great ride (with KSRC member's) I as confronted by a very upset and neglected 10 year old girl(my daughter Chloe).....
For people that don't know she is from a previous relationship that ended @ 1 year after she was born and soon after met my current partner.I have her every weekend friday night to sunday night....She was a little upset that I had been out on day ride's for the last 3 week's and work for most of the saturday....She love's bike's and most would prolly have met her at the track as she is like my shadow when I head out there in the car for races/trackday's etc.....I know that when I get a tracky she will be more than keen to help out as she is a bit of a tomboy but untill then I was considering taking her on a few ride's with me....To start with I don't think I am a bad rider at all and alway's stay well within my limit's as I have nothing to prove but am a little hesitant to have her on the back is that normal being a loved one?....Also is 10 a good age to start?...I'm not gunna be carving up twisties just leisurely scenic ride's....

My eldest is just about to turn 10, she has been a regular on the back of my bike since she turned 8 (legal age in NSW for a pillion) she loves it and is always keen to come for a ride.

The one bit of advice I will give you is do not skimp on their gear ;) I went to kid bikers and got pants and a jacket with armour for around the $200 mark, add boots, gloves and helmet to that as well. I have been lucky in that the gear I got Georgia is now handed down to Kasey, they share the boots until someone doesnt fit anymore ;) They both have their own helmet and gloves.

My second daughtewr Kasey has been getting on the back now since easter, she loves it as well. Berst thing is as soon as they start mucking up I just mention "ride forfeit" and we have well behaved kids.......well, sort of.

Hi Dave,

I would think 10 would be ok if she is comfortable on the bike, has she been out with you at all? If not try a few shorter rides to see how she goes, sometimes kids get a bit fidgety. Neither of my kids have been on a road bike with me before so I can't give you much help with that but thinking of them riding on the road gives me the willies!

Phil has been taking one of his girls out and I think she'd be around 10, perhaps shoot him a PM.

Matt

EDIT, d'oh, too late!

i used to go on the back with my dad from about 5 years old.

My problem was falling asleep on long rides...

get her some gear, maybe try a few short rides, up the shops and back sort of thing. if you have ventura, chuck it on for her to hold a bit. but honestly, better have her to hang onto you untill she gets used to the going and stopping thing.

I always ride supersmooth with a pillion, i figure if they headbutt me i am too jerky.

make sure she leans with you./ :kuda:

I have Scott from Kid Bikers mobile no, remind me tomorrow and I'll dig out his card and PM/txt ya with it. He's a good guy and will look after you.

Actually thinking about it how big is she? If you want to come and try the girls gear on (2 different size pants and jackets) it will give you an idea of sizing, that may allow you to order over the net.
