Another reason to be careful in the rain
Passed a little silver Ariba scooter lying in the road with gear strewn from the broken topbox in Hawthorn on my way home tonight. First thought was someone had come off, but no evidence of that. Got off to check and put it upright again, and all became clear. It had been parked on its centre stand on the nature strip, and one side had sunk down into the wet earth; after that gravity took over
. Someone will be sorely pissed when they come back to the bike tonight! (I shifted the scooter onto the footpath).

Who wouldn't help (unless it was a Goldwinnebago or something - I'm not doing my back for one of those!). Seriously, it's only a bike rider who's going to know how to pick another one up without damaging it. The first thing most non-riders seem to do is grab a fairing panel and pull it off.

Re: Another reason to be careful in the rain
And another one! I've been waiting for the new tram tracks on Riversdale Road to claim a bike (due to shiny tar and a 1" lip from the track up to the road level). Approaching Camberwell Junction this morning I found a scooter lying on its side on the road. Rider on the nature strip holding his ankle together (suspect fracture dislocation) assisted by a passer-by. Ambos on their way, so I picked the scoot up and parked it on the footpath. The 12" front wheel had caught on the tram lines.
So, if I went to government now, and said I wanted to run train lines down the middle of major suburban roads, with trains sharing the road with cars, would I get away with it? So why can trams do it? Leave them in the CBD.
