wanted: duty free hints n tips
first o/s trip coming up (off to NZ )
so, is it (duty free) really worth it?
someone told me you can take grog o/seas, crack it open, and then buy more when you come thru australia.. true or false?
any other hints/tips regarding duty free shopping would be great.. i just dont know if i should buy here in syd or over in NZ or even if there are any worthwhile discounts..

Discounts in Oz are so so... Cause its really only the 10% GST you save and given they generally charge full RRP at the airport for grog its often cheaper at local bottle shops. Sometimes Id grab a bottle of silver label bundy on the way back through but only as a nightcap after a long flight

Not sure about smokes though if your that way inclined??? There are limits but it tells you on the passenger card you fill in on your way back through

It's a lot cheaper to get your booze Duty Free! you get 1125mL bottle for less than a 750mL at the Bottle-O and you get 3 bottles per person going into NZ
and I don't reckon you'd get away with your crack a bottle open theory either as remember you are only allowed 100mL of liquid on a Plane in case it's a bomb
I actually saw a guy who had to dump an unopened 1125mL Johnny Walker at customs because he wasn't allowed it

Re: wanted: duty free hints n tips
Current limits are 2.25 L of grog and $900 total value. Of course, you buy it in the NZ airport and then just pack into your carry on, then it doesn't count in your limit does it
. You should be able to buy it on your way out (as in whe u get to NZ) of NZ airport as well? If you don't wanna get it in Syd. At least I could do that in Canada but not LA...

have a look at the sydney prices when your leaving then you can compare with the NZ prices and either buy there or at sydney on the way back. from memory you can buy at the NZ airports after you land to have drinkies over there. saves carrying it around.

i'm guessing he went over the Duty Free allowance and the cost of Duty on 'excess' alcohol was worth more than the grog itself.ducati_paul wrote:I actually saw a guy who had to dump an unopened 1125mL Johnny Walker at customs because he wasn't allowed it
cos if your pockets are deep enough you can bring in any amount you like.
i've seen heaps off ppl surrender their tobacco for the same reason.

Nope, it was because he was trying to take a bottle of liquid larger than 100mL onto the Plane (into the terminal initially but it was headed for the plane), remember to buy your duty free booze AFTER you've gone through customs!un_majstk wrote:i'm guessing he went over the Duty Free allowanceducati_paul wrote:I actually saw a guy who had to dump an unopened 1125mL Johnny Walker at customs because he wasn't allowed it

Have to know your prices before you go, but there are sometimes good deals, esp if you are getting the litre bottles for about the same as the 750mls. Ive always bought some before Ive left OZ and drunk it OS and then bought more on the way back in. Last time I went OS I bought some at Sydney airport and left it there for pick up on the way back through - saved me having to cart it around. Took some with us to drink of course!!

ah kay, the 'liquids restrictions'. sorry thought you meant customs inwards.ducati_paul wrote: Nope, it was because he was trying to take a bottle of liquid larger than 100mL onto the Plane (into the terminal initially but it was headed for the plane), remember to buy your duty free booze AFTER you've gone through customs!
shame on the duty free folk for not advising him at point of sale. you'd think they'd know the limits inside and out.

where you get caught is when there are a few flights. for example, met a woman who bought liqueur in Prague and was OK to carry it on the first flight but lost it in SIngapore when she changed flights and had to go through security again.un_majstk wrote:ah kay, the 'liquids restrictions'. sorry thought you meant customs inwards.ducati_paul wrote: Nope, it was because he was trying to take a bottle of liquid larger than 100mL onto the Plane (into the terminal initially but it was headed for the plane), remember to buy your duty free booze AFTER you've gone through customs!

on our recent trip my wife had her tubes of vegemite taken at Munich airport after taking them through Melbourne and Singapore
