Lane Splitting Laws
Texas is looking to enact new laws with regards to lane splitting. Wonder if we'll ever get something like this here?

I think most of us split a little over 5 MPH (8KMs/HR) but atleast its legal. Think it more written up to be politically correct. All the same, I wish something similar would come up here, even if it means we have to complete some extra training. They should just add it to the P's test or into the L's programme and you are tested for the same on your P's.

re: Lane Splitting Laws

He (the copper) said that he could have also fined me for failure to indicate and dangerous riding.
I was very pissed off at the time but i took the philosophical approach in that i should have checked my mirrors and done a proper head check before pulling out b/n the lanes

I still lane split but i'm a bit more circumspect about it (have a good look for coppers especially two wheeled plods) and always indicate (one less thing they can book me for).

Don't know if its illegal hear in NSW but I followed a copper who was lane splitting one day so figured it was ok. I always check for cars with flashing lights on top before doing it though.

Don't you know coppers can do anything in pusuit of justice and to uphold the law!
My excuse is bikies on wide Hardleys can do it at 100mph and cops turn a blind eye surely I can at 40mph, or was that 140... so when they turn their lights and sirens on I know they can't be after me so I just speed up some more and get out of their way like you are spose' too

Ah, be sure that it is illegal and also know that you can be fined for every vehicle you pass. So, always use a turning bay or bike path in favour of a 30 car lane split (one fine, versus 30).
It is not as balck and white as speeding in that some, in fact most, cops don't notice as long as you appear to be taking care. That is to say if you see a cop don't do lane split at all. If I spot a cop ahead in traffic I will stop and wave down any other bikes splitting behind me.
If you are doing it, do it in the safest way you can (slowly) and if a cop sees you he/she is not likely to do anything about it.
So if you blast through cars and a cop decides you are doing something stupid be sure you will have "the book" thrown at you.
IMO anyway
