Restricted Bike

Post by ryotalsax »

Hey guys,

Just looking for someone to talk me out of buying a 600cc motorcycle on my green P's with another 2year to go until I get my blacks... Would I even be able to get it registered? and if so what about insurance?
Has anyone done this yet? I wonder how hefty the fines would be?

Thanks for your help.

not a good idea to ride a non lams bike. apart from the fines there is an insurance issue.
there are lams 600's. think some of the 600 ducati monsters sneak in. look at the list and check.

It all depends.....your insurance won't cover you so should you hit anything make sure you have enough to cover:

Fines
Replacement of the other persons property
Payment of any health issues for the other person caused by hitting them - possibly for the rest of their lives

Your licence will probably be suspended. Any time on your P's with a suspension is added on to the time on your P's - ie get 6 month suspension and P's stay for an extra 6 months. Are you sure you want that?

These issues will only impact on your ability to purchase any vehicle insurance for the rest of your life.

Even if you don't hit anyone and don't get caught you are still taking a risk which, if you only consider the financial side of things, is very high. Is it worth it and can you afford it?

Seriously if you want a 600 then get a LAMS one. Yes that rules out sexy ZX6's R6, GSXr600 etc but there are LAMS 600's out there.

yeah do it... go on do it!!!! you'll have fun riding your pushy to work, putting a back seat on this pushy, and taking your girls out on this, or getting your mother to tag along as designated driver for your dates, paying fines off each week and having no money, hitting someone and working next 10 years for free to cover costs, having to sekll the bike cos you'll have no use for it for 2 years. on the plus side i may get a cheap tracky or someone else might get a cheap tracky from your loss. seems smart really so do it

+1... 2009-2010 zx6 is the pick of them

btw IMO 3 years is way too long to be stuck on a 250. I lasted 3 months and rode a tracky for a while. Go find yourself an older 600, buy a trailer and tracktify your hunger for more ;)

If you ride outside your licence restrictions you are basically riding uninsured and registered. NO insurance what so ever, not even third party. If you hit someone, YOU pay their medical bills. If someone hits you on the bike, tough your not covered you pay your own bills.

If you get caught expect to walk for quite some time + fines + insurance problems for life.

Can not comment on the fines and what you are or aren't covered for, however you can buy 600 Lams bikes that are restricted which can be unrestricted when you get off your P's or sooner ;) . A good starter bike is the SV650 which I believe you can get as a Lams approved bike.

Not sure about the R6 or others how they can be Lams approved as they do not appear on the RTA approved list of bikes.

You will probably learn more on an under powered bike, both road and track in any case so don't feel too disheartened about having to ride a lower powered bike.

2 problems with that -

A. If you have an accident and the investigation finds you've de-restricted your LAMS bike while on your P's you again have no insurance cover plus fines for riding above restrictions plus suspension of lic (probably). So add in the cost of vehicle repairs or replacement and any potential health issues / costs and forget cheap insurance for the rest of your life.

B. IIRC last year a ruling came in whereby if a new bike is registered as a LAMS bike it is no longer legal to remove any restrictions to make it unLAMS (????). in other words - once a LAMS bike, always a LAMS bike (applies to new rego'd bikes IIRC).

The upshot of it is this - ride a LAMS bike. Have valid insurance which will look after you and other road users! Do your time. Do trackdays if you want a safer buzz.

Not sure about the part b, as the GT650 and the SV650 were/ are being sold as being able to be de-restricted for licenced or otherwise riders. It is not a hard thing to do and the only way they can find out is by pulling your bike apart which is highly unlikely. Agree not recommended only that you can do once you are off your p's, that was what the wink was for.

Why ask on an open forum for advice on breaking the law on your 3rd post is the real question, as seen in previous threads and the posts above you are likely to come under fire from those who never sped or broken any laws. If you feel so compelled but do not know the risks and consequences of riding a unrestricted bike, then best find out the consequences first and then decide if the risk is worth it.

I do feel for the those who have to ride 250s on their learners and provisionals. As they tend to be ostracised by those who ride bigger bikes those same who have gone before them when who didn't have any restrictions on what you could ride and were killing or maiming themselves at a record rate, thus why we have restrictions today.

Better to out ride a 1000 on a 250 then it is a 1000 to out ride a 250.

Sorry for posting up a Suzuki page on this Kwaka forum but just as an example (and because I just got th DRZ400SM) look at the range of LAMS approved bikes you can get! http://www.suzukilearners.com.au/ and for what it's worth I'm having a ball on my Motard! I have a full licence so could buy any bike my wallet desired but this was the way I chose to go (although I do have a track bike as well)
oh here ya go, I just found the Kwakas as well :kuda: http://www.kawasaki.com.au/index.php?pa ... page=range

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys. It was just an idea I had in my head, it's clearly not worth it... I'll look it to the suggestions of the lams approved 600's thanks.
that R6 which is on bike sales site has been restricted but it's illegal to do so yourself, it has to be a manufacture restricted bike like the lams approved 600's. Anyway like I said only a thought and a silly one at that ;) Track bike and trailer sounds like it will tame the beasts inside, I'll look into that too.

Thanks heaps people. Talked me out of it completely! Love your work ;)
