Running in a new motor on new bike

Post by SonicZ750 »

Hey ya...

Once again some of you are aware that my Z750 is only a month old, yes 2010 edition which I love. The bike shop told me to not rev it over 6000 rpm until the first service , the manual says 4000 rpm for the first 800kms then 6000rpm until 1600kms but various mates with bikes have said dont worry about it just give it to it because they are built for it. Some have said there will be no probs if you rev it right out but just squeezing the trottle on slowly to high revs.

Im am confused, any input and advice would be good to hear...

cheers, Matt
Cheers Matt...

Ride hard but safe, and most of all have fun!

Considering your bike is tested on a dyno before it leaves the factory I don't think you have to worry too much.

mate some motorized dealers will take demo stock to the track and believe me they rev it way past that limit, also there is a write up about fanging the tits out of engines during the run in, can't link you now as I'm on the net via my phone but I'm sure someone here knows the link.
its been asked before here so try a search, results vary but what I got out of it is, do what you think is right.

edit: rob beat me to it.

i wouldnt advise hitting the limter, but i think ride it normally, but keep the revs varied.

+1 A bit surprised you haven't got to the first service in a month.
I pretty much follow the book as I suspect Kawasaki know a bit about engines.
That is why God made fast motorcycles, Bubba.... Hunter S. Thompson.

Just ride it normally, Vary the revs and load and un load the engine, 2 worst things you can do is sit on the freeway at 110kph at constant rpm or bounce it off the limiter...the later being better than the first.

If u pussy the bike around at 4k rpm u will get a weak engine as it wont seal the rings properly....

if u have access to a dyno you can run your bike in properly in under 1hr, its about heat cycles and seating the pistons and rings properly.

i was told that the worst thing was loading the engine up, i.e. putting it in top gear at 80 (on any bike of 600+cc) and laboring up a slight incline. as that really screws with the bedding in process. Aside from that, vary the revs and just be gentle for a few thousand km. the 4k rpm thing is a bit low and would lead to the "loading up" i mentioned above if you've got a high speed road going over a decent sized hill.

Follow the manufactorors recommendations, although I never did. Just make sure after it is broken in properly including the oil change you take it to red line once in awhile. Racing motors do not need the break in period as the bearing and ring clearances are much looser than on a motor that is driven on the street, but also they only last 2 or three races as well. Kind of like a fifth of Jim Beam, the first sips go down slowly then the second half of the bottle is gone in a flash.
