Whilst i'm not a Phil Gould fan i reckon he made some fair points on the footy show last night. He said that last night rugby league wants to showcase teams like the melbourne storm as benchmarks for the modern day professionally run rugby league team & it costs a lot of money to get a team to look like that. Whilst it is wrong what they did & should be penalised it also highlights problems with the salary cap. He went on & on as he does .........do you want to watch teams like the melbourne storm or the cronulla sharks?

I like Gould's take on th game in most cases. This one i don't.
No doubt the Storm are the pinnacle of what a team should be. However, this has only been achieved by starving the other 15 teams of a portion of their talent.
What i mean by this is, the NRL has a finite pool of talent. If all clubs lifted the salary cap by $1M, does that mean all of a sudden they all start playing like the Storm? Paying a player better deosn't mean the team will play better.
The only reason you'd consider the increase is to stop players jumping ship to Union/AFL/British Super League...
The salary cap was introduced to stop clubs going broke. Lets face it were not a huge population, we support many various kinds of sports and apart from maybe V8 racing and cricket we dont truely have many other well supported self sufficient national codes...
As for compensation well Melbourne (100% owned by News Ltd) have been fined heavily by the NRL (50% owned by News Ltd)... What a wank of a fine

At present Id prefer to watch Melbourne. But who's to say if over the last few years they weren't able to hold the talent pool via cheating where some players may have ended up? On any given weekend Ill watch maybe 3 or 4 games and besides Melbourne and maybe StGeorge at present each game is a toss of the coin. Its great entertainment for those who love it!
You poor soul, even the people in Canberra don't all support those duds.
This storm thing couldn't have happened to a better team.

Even if they are this is a bit rough the amount of talent they have found and also lost to other clus should be
penalty enough. But seriously ok strip them of this years points so far but to go back that many years
is just Stupid.
You can't be serious??? Where did the Storm find all this talent. It surely wasn't in Victoria.
Every team that becomes too successful loses players due to salery cap restrictions why should Melbourne be any different.
I don't agree with no points all year. That can only be negative.
I think maybe lose all points so far and they can only pick up points when they are under the cap. I don't mean by player pay cuts because they would still be the same team. They would have to let players go first before they could pick up points for wins.

Well it looks like they will loose players as well as the rest of the stuff ,i really dont see how they will recover, sponsors getting of as well.
In regards to finding talent of course the talent was from interstate take king as an example he was playing in the nowhere leage but bellamy had the forsight to give him a go.He is a great coach and has a knack for this,it would be a shame to see him also go as im sure plenty of clubs would benifet from his knowledge. In the end it will hurt rugby leauge all over and although they cheated on the salary cap and im sure there not the only ones that have .The price is years of nrl trying to break into victoria(lots and lots of money) and now they probably have killed it off.I for one will never watch any games unless the storm is playing the rest of the teams can go play with themselfs

It will be hard for melbourne but it will show what type of character they have as a team and individuals. They can turn this around just like the Bulldogs did in 02 or they an winge about it until they dissapear up their own backsides. I would like to see them fight and come back strongly within the rules. When they do the right thing sponsers will come back. Remember they are bankrolled by News Ltd so money will not be a problem.Yes they have a good coach and the team have possibly the best facilities etc to help them succeed. Every sucessful team will lose players it is the nature of the beast Melbourne should not be allowed to keep theirs just because they are in an area that the NRL are trying to break into.
