I feel for you and the family Aardy. Sometimes life is hard but its better to have loved and lost... I dont get tears too often but my best mate growing up left me in a mess when he departed after a tough decision. But I cherish every moment we had. I know you and Riker would too.

Losing your Dog is worse than losing a Human
They always have time for you and never give you shit.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks again for the support guys. Have been outside to do a few things today and the yard feels empty. The sooner someone invents a doggy translator, the better. Then our pets could tell us if we are doing the right thing or not.

Sometimes, I think that if I believed in a higher-power that saying goodbye would be easier. Alas, I don't. But I do appreciate the sentiments Sulli.

Mate it is something you had to do, he was loved and died without pain, there is nothing more you can ask for from life. That doesn't make it easier for you or your family though. When you truly care you can make hard decisions like you have, he was not short of friends. My condolences.

Seeya Riker, don't worry, they have massive marrow bones up there in heaven.

Condolences aardy and family. Its about the most horrible decision you'll ever have to make, but take heart in knowing its also the kindest.

Lameness in one leg.
Constant licking of his two other legs.
The skin on his tummy has been flaky and fragile.
A weird cough from deep in his lungs.

Took him down this morning. I figured that if I was the one who had to make the decision for him, then I should be brave enough to be there for him. He kept chomping on snacks right up until the last minute - that's my boy!!

Now that I'm home, I feel sick, and the house is one family member less.

RIP old mate.
I don't mind admitting that made me tear up Jason! I really feel for you and the family mate. :( On the positive side though, I bet his life was a life full of love and happiness. That's more than most pooches ever get.
