Cya Riker!
I came home from work last night to find my dog limping. I took him to the vet and they asked to have him back today to x-ray his leg. They didn't think the outcome would be good.
He has osteosarcoma in his front right leg. Osteosarcoma is a bone cancer with very rapid onset. He was fine on Wednesday, Thursday night he was limping. I've made this tough decision this afternoon to have him put down tomorrow. Not an easy decision to make.
Our last Alaskan Malamute died when he was three. Dad rang me a month or so later and said that he knew of a woman who had a Malamute pup and the dog was caught up in a bitter divorce. I made the decision to take him and when we got him, it was obvious he hadn't been very well looked after. I called him Riker, after Will Riker from Star Trek (nerdy, yes, I know...). For those that don't know, Riker was Captain Picards second in command. Knowing that Riker would never replace Oskar, I thought naming him after "Number 1" was fitting.
He loves to dig holes - BIG holes! He loves to talk to people - if you can call it talking, and he loves my family to bits. When our two children came along, he just accepted them as is. There was no complicated acceptance phase.
I don't consider myself to be a sook. I've seen too much to get upset over most things. But this is hard. It's the easiest thing I've ever had to decide, and the hardest.
He's been a fantastic mate for the last 9 years.
Cya buddy!

I know your pain, Jase. Having to make a similar decision is the hardest thing I've ever done.
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..
If it's got wheels or tits, it's gonna give you trouble !

You poor bastard Jas. I guess it goes without saying he'll have his favourite dinner tonight. RIP Riker.

Re: Cya Riker!
He doesn't really have a favourite dinner, since he pretty much only ever has rice cooked in chicken stock, vegetables and some kibble.dave#3 wrote:I guess it goes without saying he'll have his favourite dinner tonight. RIP Riker.
However, he did eat one (maybe 2) of the neighbours chickens the other day. And I gave him some of my chocolate icecream tonight. He's never had chocolate before, since it's bad for dogs, but I'm sure tonight it won't matter.
Thanks for the well wishes guys. The poor guy looks bloody miserable tonight.
