Thermo Fan question

Post by seiko1 »

My old ZZR fan would come on and stay on even after the bike was turned off if it was hot.
My question to the ZX14 owners is, does your bike do this?
Mine can be 1 bar from the top and if I turn it off....off goes the fan :?

yep thermo turns off with no power. Shouldnt need a thermo as your no longer generating heat when it is turn off.

leave your ignition on if you want it to stay on.

when the engine is off, the water isnt flowing anyway, so fan is not doing much.

R6's run the fan after the bike is off as it heats up alot and very quickly once the bike is switched off, no coolant flowing etc.
Best off if the bike gets hot to let it idle for a while to cool down at least to 100C.

Having the thermo fan on for 4-5 minutes after the bike stops is a good thing, if for no other reason it helps keep things from warming up (the terminology is called "heat soak") as heat that is caught in the head and other metalwork is transferred to the rest of the engine and heats it up more for a few minutes after ignition is cut.

On hot stinkers at EC and Oran park a few of us would keep water spray bottles in the esky and spray the rad when pulled in as my bike would hit 110c on track some days 118C in the pits after a session, drops to 90 very quick with some cool water on the rad.

Hey guys!

I just purchased my new 2010 zx14

I have only done a few hundred km's on it and the temp runs a pretty much constant 3 bars (4 is max) from when it's warmed up... thermo fan stays on alot of the time... this wasnt the case with my 10.... is this normal?

Cheers

I wouldnt worry too much dude, new engine will run hotter until run in.. Try not to get caught up in too much traffic though during the run in period, it will heat up pretty quickly!
Lucky its just gone on spring, summer is the worst for running a new motor in..
As for the thermo fan thing, on fairly hot days if i switch my 10 off and its at anything above 96degs ill flick my ignition back on and run the fan for a few minutes as it does climb upto 5degs or more very quickly with heatsoak..
115degs or more is in the danger zone for the 10 but id like to keep it well away from there :P

done 250km now its running more on the side of 2 bars as opposed to 3 now, only time the thermo comes on is when im waiting at a set of lights for too long...

as well as starting to run cooler the exhaust note has changed (aftermarket system is waiting in the cupboard :) on soon) and aslo the engine nosie at idle is becoming more apparent... when it gets to about 400km im going to drop the oil and put some fresh mineral oil in it and keep running it in...

No mate, Keep worrying. Not about your bike, Just about the god awful looking head you have. If the worry gets to much, just slip a bag over it. Not only will you feel better but i am guessing that all those who come in contact with you will also be impressed and indeed thankful
