2007 ZX10R Electrical Issues

Post by philipjfry »

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd share an issue (that has now been resolved) with my 07 zx10r.

I went to start my bike one day and it struggled to turn over. Went for a ride and left it as normal over night. next day, she was dead. No dials, lights or anything. I jump started it and managed to get it to the bike shop just as it died. Lucky it was a downhill run into the driveway and there was no traffic around...

The bike shop replaced the battery and checked the points, checked the charging system and said it was fine. Three days later, same issue.

Took it back and they checked it again, was given the bike back and told that they couldn't find any issues.

Two days later, same again. Took it back in a tow truck because it died while I was riding.

This time the bike shop checked the stator and found that the stator looked like a chocolate chip cookie that had been left in the oven for about 3 days. The thing was a fried jumble of mess.

Long story short, if your bike does anything like this, get the bike shop to check that first. Would've saved me a lot of heartache and missed rides had they checked it initially. Apparently the charging system was working fine while the bike was cold, but once she got up to a decent running temperature the stator was shorting and hence no charging.

Hope I dn't sound like I'm blathering, and hope this helps out anyone with similar issues...

I did a little research on the net afterwards and there were a few guys in the USA complaining of the same thing... there weren't any recalls listed on the Kawasaki website either.. maybe just a few dud stators...

Sorry if I was going over old ground!

I would be checking the recitifer too. Just in case this has been damaged, or is the cause of the stator issue. There is a nice pic of mine on the other thread.

are you sure about this last bit ??

Good news that the cause was found though, this seems to be a bit of a common thing with the Gumby's ??

Guess who elses zx10 isn't charging!
Think I'm going to have to pull the cover off tomorrow and see what colour the stator is.

Not wanting to be preying on the misfortune of others, but if any of you guys are after a used stator, let know - I've replaced mine the the kit set-up.

Cheers,
Brian

Gidday Mike,

The kit assembly replaces stator, rotor and cover ; it’s partly about less output required for track bikes, and also in reducing the rotating weight at the end of the crank. All-up, it’s 737g lighter, and more importantly the rotor is 348g of that. Plus, the design of the rotor is quite different to the standard part – as you’d be aware, the standard rotor looks something like a clutch housing, while the kit part is more like a cotton reel. I got the assembly from TKA, all-up it cost about $1250. Given the rain we’ve had in Sydney of late and the fact I don’t yet have any wets, I’ve yet to actually ride the bike with the new alternator, but it does feel like it revs a bit quicker (not necessarily a good thing trying to get out of corners, mind you …).

As regards the OEM stator, not really sure what it’s worth, will give a dealer a call and see what new goes for. It was running fine when it came off the bike, at a guess with 4-5000 km on the clock (replaced with kit tacho, so no idea of actual mileage). I can deliver it to PI when I’m down in a couple of weeks, or post it prior.

BTW, you may have missed my other post, but are you still interested in the tank ? I can also bring that when I come down.

Cheers,
Brian
