new to me GPZ600r

hi guys im new so if im doing anythink rong tell me. ive just bought a gpz600 everythink seems fine with it just the headlight looks wrong? ill put a pic up! its just not like any of the other pics on here it sits back in the flairing to much. on its a 1987 gpz600r new battrey new front tyre needs a rear got a rack for the back just needs to be put on if its the rite one for the bike and it has done 70odd thousand kms. anythink i should be weary off? ps i didnt find this site till after i got bike otherwise i would have asked these questions.

G'day and welcome......... :shock: Yeah the headlight needs looking at :shock: ....... it should be pretty well flush with the fairing.......

I had one of these a few years back, identical to look at but mine was an 86'....... Keep an eye on the front disc's they are prone to warping, but you will get used to that..... other than that they are a great bike for their age, so just ride it until you upgrade :D

OOHHH the other thing is wrong is spelt with a "w" Glad to help :lol:

haha thanks smithy could it be possiblity a retro fit outa another bike? im still waiting on the bike to be transported to me (tomora nite 11th march) so i cant tell anyone wheather its broken near the headstem. a friend who i got bike off says thats how he bought is and it all works as it should but yes im a perfectised i want it to be fixed. any hints on where to get spares???

Welcome aboard :D

Love the GPZ range - your 600 looks pretty good but the headlight looks like it's mounted too far back. Upper fairing frame damaged perhaps? Shouldn't be too hard to fix tho.

As Smithy5 said - watch the disks for warping. The callipers also tend to have the sliders stick but easily fixed.
I don't like the term insane - I prefer mentally hilarious!

Maybe your friend is into disco's :shock: :lol: looks to me like it would rattle around like a strobe light...

Wait until you get the bike home and have a look.. There are plenty of older bike guru's on here, even in SA, that will help you out if you can't sort it with a quick fix...........

mounted too far back is that as easy fix as it sounds, unbolt and mount closer? no fairing seems to be cracked split or been fixed be4. but im new to bike so i could not be seeing the problem.
also disks seem fine no lip on disks but i havent ridin it yet i went an seen it last weekend

i just checked up at the local kawa dealers in clare tonite and they can source new spares for me thro kawa in adel? would it be wise goin brand new rather then secondhand? but i spose it wont be the cheapest way.
also a full service with everything excluding the brake fluid and air fillter but everything else is gana cost me $250-300 good price????
also i need a helmet and gloves they only had two types of helmets fullfaced with flip up visior$199 and the type where the whole front flips open$299(like the police) brand i couldnt remmber but not the normal brands like shoei ect. any good???

Not sure about the price to service it but it's pretty easy to do it yourself + you get to learn more about your bike.

Plugs are easy, air filter should be a case of clean, dry, re-oil. Not sure if this model has a fuel filter but again if it does it's easy to replace. Change the oil is pretty easy. I'd suggest investing in a workshop manual which will show the basics for servicing. Again, not sure about the 600 but valve clearances should be checked and adjusted as well.

Would be a good time to check the battery levels and state of charge. Check the fluid level in the overflow tank for coolant. Check the radiator for actual coolant and not just water - actually wouldn't be hard to flush it out and replace with new coolant.

Plugs, oil / fuel filters, oil. coolant.

Just check to see if that "full service" includes valve clearances being checked too.

For helmets it's worth trying on as many as possible - some will fit better than others and the range in prices will be much better. Same with gloves.

That's just my $0.02 tho - lots of more experienced people here with advice :D

Firstly with the mounting position of the headlight,there is a reason someone has done something dodgey........ be it a smash or possibly cracked headlight that has been replaced with the wrong type, please don't assume that you can unbolt & move it, if it was that easy it would not be in the position you see it in now, I suggest look very closely at what is going on there.
With the helmet, remember the more you pay chances are the better the helmet is going to be, with the flip open ones you are paying a premium price just for that feature so I suggest for a first helmet get a standard full face, shop around & don't impulse buy just because one may look trick..... spend the time to make sure it fits snug but not too tight (the padding will get looser over time) Another suggestion is try on some more expensive ones, its amazing the difference in fit between a real cheap helmet & an expensive one, when trying on the helmet wear it in the shop for 10 minutes, remember you are spending a fair whack of money you want to make sure it fits well so you want be dissapointed the next day when it doesn't feel that good when riding ;)

ok guys i got the manual and got the bike. the headlight looks likes its made to be there with its steel retainer strip round the lens and it dont wobble or move in anyway, hybeam and lowbeam work. is there a pespex lens that fits flush with the fairing? not the light. because there is a few screw mounting holes just inside the fairing hole(i cant see that just a few plastic mounts hold the big light, they would snap under load ie rough road bumps ect). also got a bag rack for the bike i put it on this morning looks good. any help with the light as this is my only concern!!!!!!!!! if you need pictures i will get some asap anyway

From what I remember, that looks like it's the wrong headlight. :shock:
It should be flush with the bodywork. :?
