I noticed in the post office yesterday a sign that said Lithium batteries were now classed as Dangerous Goods and could not be sent on aircraft.

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) is the body responsible for setting standards and regulations for airlines to adopt.

It is safe the airfreight lithium cells & batteries if:
1. a lithium metal cell, the lithium content is not more than 1 g;
2. a lithium metal or lithium alloy battery, the aggregate lithium content is not more than 2 g

Lithium Ion batteries also are affected:
1. for cells, the Watt-hour rating is not more than 20 Wh;
2. for batteries, Watt-hour rating is not more than 100 Wh. The Watt-hour rating must be marked on the outside of the battery case except those manufactured before 1 January 2009 which may be transported without this marking until 31 December 2010.

Take a Laptop battery for example. If it is 14.4V 7.8Ah LiIon, the WH rating is 112 (14.4v x 7.8Ah).

The industry is now moving more towards producing battery packs less than 100 Wh to avoid any hassles...

Just chucking my 2cents in :kuda:
