no 12 month pillion restriction on full licence now??

Post by waynemorgan »

Just checking on the restrictions for P1 / P2 riders and Full rider licence. Used to be that to ride with a pillion you had to hold your full licence for 12 months beforehand. I can't seem to find it mentioned on the RTA website anymore.

Restrictions for P1/P2 - http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/get ... rider.html
Full rider licence - http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/get ... cence.html

I'm sure I've not gone nuts enough to lose the ability to search but I can't find it anywhere on the site.

Anyone else?

I have my full licence but I was told I can't ride with a pillion until 1 year after getting it! (by counterstaff at the RTA)

When I went for my P's test, the instructor was going over the pillion rules. When I got my L's I was certain that I had read that P1 and P2 was restricted from riding with a pillion, however the instructor made it very clear that P1 is restricted, but P2 can legally ride with a pillion.

Yea I swear I read somewhere that P1 was restricted and P2 wasn't....
But reading this stuff here looks like P2 is restricted to....

UPDATE: Found this

Can I carry a passenger on a P2 rider licence?
Yes

when i got my licence a few years ago it was no pillion for L and P, but you could take a pillion once you got full licence. I didint look into it greatly as the zx10 is no pillion machine :kuda:

Law breaker Pinchy :P The old deal was always that you had to have your fulls for twelve months before you could pillion. Thus, even if you were over thirty and entitled to a gold license and you therefore went straight to your Full's you still couldn't pillion for twelve months. The RTA sent some clarification out to us when I was instructing back in the old days. It always seeemed strange to me that the RTA assessed that you were good enough to ride a GSXRZXR1CBR1000000000 but you couldn't handle a pillion.

Maybe they've changed it. Don't bother asking the RTA as I'm sure you'll get a different answer depending who you ask. Maybe try the cops, they used to get the updates pretty frequently when things changed

Well given tat the new P2's are at the same point where you used to be at when you got your full license, it sort of makes sense if you are able to carry passengers on your P2's, as you would be at the same "level of skill" that you would have been pre P1/P2's when you got your full license.

As giving the rta close to $800.00 the past 6 months, I regard myself as a professional navigating the matrix, episode 4, which is the RTA website. This includes numerous phone calls to their helpdesk. I'm 99% sure that P2 and above can ride with a pillion.

Below says only P1 cannot carry a pillion passenger.

hopefully that helps some

My mate said he was quoted by the RTA man the same thing Tim, i kept arguing with him saying he was wrong lol. It used to says that you must hold your license for a 12months before you can pillion thats it! they make it very vague. My interpretation of this law is that your Provisional license period (P1) is counted as P1 is technically a license and not a permit, thats why B-Ry's instructor said

.

I cant see why you are on you "Full" license which is deem as "unrestricted" and still subject to restrictions...
Also if you are restricted by law you'll have a little letter that symbolises your condition (i.e S for spectacles), do you have a condition on the back or front of your license tim? if no i say fuck it just ride with a pillion and take it to court and fight the mofos if you get caught!

No symbol on my licence, but I'll be waiting the year even tho I've got people bugging me to take them for a spin!!!!

You have to play by their rules and in having a licence it's our responsibility to ride within the law no matter how hard it is to find.

I'd rather not have to go to court too - and then there's always the problem with a pillion if you're not licensed to carry one does that mean your insurance might not be valid? :? Exit the wowser :D
