You won't go wrong with a ZX9, I love mine to bits, bits of plastic might fall off from time to time, occasionally a wire to the tail lights or some other insignificant part will come off and need to be resoldered. Engine never quits, it has enough power to stay on the heels of any new 1000 bike on the road, if it cant, swap riders and watch it pull away from the flash new bike, runs near on a ten flat down the 1/4 with some practice, strapping the front and a sprocket change may even see you in the high 9's. Can easily do 2500km in 3-4 days without crippling the rider, is reliable enough and good enough on fuel (depending on how much fun your ride to work is) to be a daily commuter. Feels a LOT bulkier than current litre bikes, but isn't really that much harder to hustle through the twisties, will get eaten by any 600 on your favourite road, unless your favourite road is straight, in which case you will go flying past them at such a rate they will cry and want one.
As others have said, it really is very difficult to find another bike that does it all as well as a later model ZX9 2000, K1 and K2 Gixxers are a pretty good all rounder, but I prefer the ZX9.
Ramble over, off to get another beer 8)

Can't agree with either of these comments!
First half of the sentence: When it comes to road riding, it's more about the rider than the bike. As an extreme example, I've seen a postie bike overtake a CBRthou, not to mention most of the 9 riders I know are quick and extremely capable riders.
And you will never make a 6 rider cry and want a 9 - why would they want to downgrade like that??? ;)

Yep i dont believe a 600 has ever passed me on my favorite roads. I do remember a ride with photomike where i was going along as usual and stopped at the end, mike then pulled over and said did you see that guy on the 600 he was going at it real hard trying to catch you.Nope didnt see him until i had pulled over.It is definatly the rider that is the difference on the road plus knowing the road is also a great advantage. But when i consistantly get passed by 600cc bikes i will buy one ;)

The 9 is a great bike,
I had a beautiful blue c1 many moons ago. The thing I remember most about it apart from the great colour is that engine. It pulled so hard!and was so smooth.
The handling was average but that motor was great. 2up riding is a breeze and long distances where not a problem. Did I mention how hard the motor pulled :D

The best all-round, do-everything road bike you can get. They have plenty of get-up-and-go, very comfy for long rides, plenty of luggage attachment options for long rides, won't limit you in the twisties, easy to ride. Basically, you can do practically everything on them, and it does it all really, really well.

I really dont know why I stick with the six, but Ive gone on and on about it for so long now, I gotta save face.

Do yaselves a favour and go the nine!

And on the seventh day Richo ended his work which he had made. Decided resting was for soft cox, straddled the REX and headed up the old road.
And it was good

I have found one I like the look of - 2003 model, lime green, low kms, nice exhaust, right price.... now Im just after the low down... the good, the bad, the ugly..... any comments?

I have the 2002 version (my second. Bought a new one in 2002, traded it in '04 for a z1000 which got stolen. Nowdays I'm on another '02 ZX9)

Great bike, which I still like better than modern hypersports.

Super-comfy, very stable, sounds awesome, heaps of top end. Even the stock suspenders are pretty good, and I never like stock suspenders.

I can fang with a mate on a new blade, and he's a much faster rider than me, so they are certainly capable.

Downsides? Errrr.....well it's heavier/wider than modern tackle. Throttle response feels less precise than current machines (though still prefectly smooth & fine from where I sit)

Can get carb icing when its really cold (mind you, this was riding in freezing fog from Canberra to Cooma in winter)

I love the things.

Hi there

I have only had my 9 on the road since late friday afternoon and i love it. I have not had a bike for approx 2 years and bought it damaged and have repaired it and made it mine over time. Friday was RWC and rego and now she is on the road.

She is comfortable/fast and looks great. She is a 1996 B series bike and i think i will keep her forever.

Cheers Nick

You'll have a ball!
Take it easy while you learn the bike - it'll soon be second nature to you.
If you have no fear, you're not going fast enough.
Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
