a reason to wear contacts?

Coming home from town this evening we turned off Mulgoa Rd into Glenmore Park and saw a guy with his pushbike up on the footpath. Said to Tyler - looks like he's got a flat. Went around the roundys and got back to him and parked up on the kerb. We've noticed this guy cycling around several times because his "pushy" also has an electric motor.

Turns out the poor guy had been knocked off by a car (which didn't stop). He was a right mess - shirt & trousers destroyed, helmet broken etc. Bleeding pretty bad on his legs and arms. He was not walking around but just standing there.

In the prang his glasses had gone flying. Like me - he's blind as a bat without them. Couldn't even call his wife on the iPhone because he couldn't see the screen. After a bit of hunting Tyler found the glasses - unbroken fortunately. He then called his wife who came to pick him up. Poor guy was really shaken and in shock. We waited around for a while but he assured us he was fine.

After seeing this I started thinking (for a change ) - maybe I'd be better with contact's because if my glasses ever came off in a prang I'd be in the same boat.

What's the general thought on this? Are glasses likely to come adrift from within the helmet? If mine came off they probably contact the visor - but would they become dangerous in that situation? Any thought's from the more experienced?

i have contacts....never want to go back to glasses. (only wear them around the house to let my eyes rest)

Advantages:
- Clearer vision
- No need to clean (if you soak it in the liquid overnight)
- don't fog up when you drink soup
- very hard to loose/fall out
- great for people with active lifestyles i.e playing sports

Disadvantages
- get styes if your hands aren't clean
- hard to take out at first, but you'll get the hang of it
- Uncomfortable when you put them in with dry eyes


GET THEM!! If your afraid it will fall out then bring a spare set. You'll look prettier as well hahaha. Good work on staying back and helping the dude!

Mate your a champion for going out of your road & turning around to stop and help that poor man.
Most people wouldnt even turn their heads let alone stop

as for the glasses mate, when i come off my bike i lost the visor on my helmet on impact
and my sunnies which i had on at the time flew straight off my head. I found them on the side of the road without a scratch

so i would go the contacts if it was me , also they dont press into the side of your head like glasses sometimes can.

As for the contacts, the keeper wears em 80% of the time because they are easy..... like me.

If I could wear contacts, I would! I am allergic to the solutions used to clean contacts, so it isn't worth spending $$$'s on them. I looked into getting a prescription visor, but at $5,000 I quickly forgot that idea! I can imagine that other benefits, other than those listed above, are

- contacts won't fog when riding in the rain
- contacts don't bounce around on your nose on very bumpy roads
- contacts won't dig into the side of your head, or sit awkardly when you slide them on under the helmet.

Speak to your optometrist about which would be the best solution for you - daily disposables, frequent-replacement contact lens (monthly disposables) or a standard lens (non-disposable). Different lenses suit different purposes, and variables such as your susceptiability to allergens, pollution, your skin type, eye tearing etc can all influence the correct lens.

This questionaire gives you an idea as to your suitability to wear contacts, and this document is a guide to the care and handling of contacts.

I have tried both and find glasses to be a better bet. Sure, contacts are pretty comfortable most of the time compared to having glasses frames sitting in your lid. Glasses have been known to also break the odd nose in a crash. But, even given that I would prefer to ride in glasses than contacts.

The disadvantages I find with contacts is that they get dust and dirt in them very easily. Once this happens, it's often very difficult to see at all as your eyes tend to water up really badly. Often my eyes would spit the contact out and I'd lose it. So if you are going to ride with contacts, use disposables. Also on a long ride, they dry out really badly and by the end of the day, it feels like you have sandpaper inside your eyelids.

I've been wearing contacts for 17 years and I would never go back to glasses. I have the one day disposable ones which are a great option if you just want to wear them a couple of times a week or if you have a problem with eye makeup building up on the contacts .

I am totally blind without contacts I found that wearing glasses in a helmet (the couple of times Ive had to when Ive run out of contacts!) cut out a lot of peripheral vision as the style I was wearing were quite small. I also couldnt just glance down at the speedo because I couldnt see that far without looking through the lens so I had to move my whole head rather than just my eyes which was bothering me.

Give them a try for sure!

I rode for a few years with glasses and *hated* *hated* *hated* the hassle and fogging issues. I was planning on getting contacts if I couldn't get my eyeballs lasered, so I would go ahead and give it a go. You can always go back to using your glasses if the contacts don't work well for you! But on the other hand - if you're happy with glasses and not really keen on contacts, I don't think this would be enough to tip the scales - after all, you came along to help this guy. There's always someone nice and helpful just around the corner!

A friend crashed with sunnies on, and the arms of the sunnies scratched his scalp enough that we thought he had head trauma from the blood - scalp wounds bleed a lot apparently - he only had small scratches. I don't remember if the sunnies stayed on, or if they scratched him as they were forced off - seeing blood on his head and helmet kinda overrode any concern about losing sunnies, so can't help you with the anecdotes on the likelihood of them flying off!

I wear contacts all the time and don't usually have any problems with them at all. On trips away I'll always have my glasses with me so I can get around when I've got them out and also as a backup in case something happens to them.
