Smaller Front Sprocket

Post by Kermitz750 »

Hey guys,
iv'e just ordered a front sprocket for my Z750, the standard is 15 tooth and i have coming a 14 tooth. just had an after thought about my speedo reading, is it going to be correct still or will i need to re calibrate the speedo. also, was it a wise idea to change the front instead of getting a bigger one for the back. i heard a larger rear sprocket will last longer (and not coz your buying a new chain) due to the circumference being larger so not to stress the chain out.. the front smaller one has a tighter circumference so it could reduce the life of the chain... whats the best way to go about it, or should i just change both and be lifting the front every time i accelerate off at the lights? hhmmmmm that could be fun!!!!
It's not easy being green!!!!

putting on a smaller front, will give you better acceleration, and a slight reduction in top speed.

Does your speedo read from the front sprocket ?? If it does, then you will need to fit a Speedo Healer - get 'em off ebay.

Smaller front sprockets will increase chain wear, as the chain has to make a tighter turn. Its not a huge amount, but you can expect a shorter lifespan. Fitting a larger rear sprocket is better, but yeh, you normally need a new (longer) chain when you do this, whereas with the smaller front, you can use the old chain if its in good nick, and just lop a link or 2 off as required.
