Condition of VicRoad C543 (Omeo Highway)

Post by Mick ZX12R »

G'day all,

I've heard a few whispers that the Omeo Highway is now tarred in its entirety. Does anyone know if this is the case?
I am planning my trip to WSBK and would like to take this route but my ZX12R does not enjoy gravel fully loaded.
Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi, just back from Omeo, stayed at the Blue Duck, all tarred but not race track stuff. Specifically, from where to where and I'll confirm.
Cheers, TC

Thanks TC,

Well I'd like to turn off the Murray Valley Highway and ride it's full length to Omeo. I did it almost 15 years ago in a 4WD and can remember 2 dirt sections. I have my route planned home, just planning the way down.

Cheers,

Mick

Heard the same rumour, spoke to Alf at Tintaldra and he said it wasnt. That is if you are talking about the way through Mitta Mitta.

I have thought about going that way - but missing out on the run down Hotham to Harrietville and then Tawonga Gap made me think otherwise.

Sorry for the slight hi-jack, but I've recently been looking at this area myself for a trip to the Island later in the year and I can't find a way from Canberra to Bairnsdale that is bitumen all the way, other than through Cooma, Bombala and Cann River....... Anyone know a road that is bitumen or if it is dirt/gravel what is the quality of the surface for sportsbikes.

I spoke to the guy at the Mitta Mitta General store about 10 months ago and there was 2 dirt sections then, he said they were in pretty good nick and should present a problem for sportsbikes, just get on the whitepages.com.au and look up the Mitta Mitta general store and have a chat to him, he seems like a nice guy and was up for a chat when I spoke to him.

Just spoke with the Oracle on motorcycle roads south of Cooma and he says that the Mitta Mitta Rd still has about 30 klms of dirt on it, which is best not tackled on a road bike. He is hard core, so if he says it's best not tackled on a roadie, it normally means it is entrirely shite!! I've ridden on his definition of good dirt, and it's just passable on a roadie!! So if he says it is not suitable, I have no doubts it is still pretty rough.

He did however say, that the rd from Falls Ck to Omeo is now sealed. He did it over new years and reckons it is a fantastic loop to do Bright, tawonga gap, Mt Beauty, Falls ck, Omeo, Hotham, Harrietville, Bright!!! 8)

Thanks for the info guys, I have just plotted a different route going a tad further west before turning onto Kiewa East Rd then onto the Kiewa Valley Highway, Mount Beauty and then the Great Alpine Rd.

Cheers and see you at the supers,

Mick

I've done the Omeo highway, Mitta Mitta to Anglers rest and yes there is about 30 km of gravel, not too bad as far as logging roads go, some sections have quite bad corrugations but they are rideable.
The section of sealed road from the end of the gravel down to Anglers Rest (Blue Duck) makes it worth while!
