As an off point to my earlier opinion, here in vic. you don't have to have a trailer registered if its.....
-not for trade purposes (eg lawnmowing business blah blah blah)and
-under 200kgs without load and
-if the width is narrower than the vehicle towing it and
-it is less than 3 metres long from tip of drawbar to end (including load)
I plan on living forever..............so far so good!!

The trailer in question is a bigun, but it is a valid point to the excessiveness of the fine, what's the fine for driving a car just out of rego? it would have to be 3-4 times more considering the severity of the offence

The trailer in question is a 7x4 box trailer. It looks big because of the wheels but would still fit (just) in those guidelines.

As for me "sooking it up on the Internet", I put it up here to let others know the severity of such a small mistake and to have a discussion about what my options are. As I have said from the beginning I was more than willing to accept an appropriate consequence for my mistake but was blown away by the ridiculous fine for such a petty offence. It was only after knowing the size of the fine did I bring up the notion of discretion and whether a huge fine needed to be issued in this instance. I have to use discretion every day in my job and would hope that those in charge of maintaining the peace and safety of the public were intelligent enough to do the same. Lately, the encounters I've had with them have demonstrated the opposite which put forward the sarcastic question are they deliberately trying to put people offside?

In my job I have to try very hard to convince people who truly do hate cops that the police are there for their protection and for the most part do a fantastic job (and I work with them on a regular occurrence), so you have clearly misunderstood my posts if its come across indicating that I hate them. Maybe I struck three very ambitious young cops who were out to prove a point or maybe the force is changing and the use of discretion is going the way of manners and honer. Who knows? The fact remains that they use the rhetoric that they have no choice but to issue the fine and to take it to court if you think it's unfair; which, costs more money, you need to take a day off work to do it and wastes the court's time.

After talking to the SDRO this morning I will be writing a letter to them but I don't like my chances. If the review doesn't support my argument I will take this one to court and try to get the fine reduced to a reasonable amount.

I can still pick the back end up if it's empty and attached to the car  but you could be right with the weight.

This thread has reminded me that my trailer is due for rego.

If I was booked for the same thing I would also be very pissed but with myself for my stupidity. Yes I think the fine is excessive but the responsibility sits with the owner of the trailer.

As for Hoffy's last post I take great offence to you labeling Bob Marley with the rest of your rant. 8) :kuda:

Mate after consideration I reckon you need to play the game on this one!

With christmas time it must have gotten delayed at the post office or something.

Pay it and send copies of both the cheque stub and the payment made over the internet.
I dont think morally this is the best thing to do but I reckon thats your best chance Nelso! Ive priced my morals at around $500 apparently

The person reviewing your fine would need to be able to justify to his/her boss why they let you off. By typing something stating that yes it was a mistake or you simply forgot effectively admits guilt and you may not get off. Play the game mate!!!

Speaking of crime fitting punishment, l am going to court for driving down a dirt track that was closed for seasonal closures. l did it, l'll plead guilty but the max penalty l am looking at is $5500 or 1yr jail.....or both! Had l known it was that bad, no l wouldn't have taken the risk but hindsight is 20/20 vision.

Sounds like you were very unlucky Nelso.

That said, i can see the argument that Ardvark puts forward. The beauty of discression is that there is never a complaint when your let off. When your caught, its shit and compleint worthy. Cant change the fact that most people think cops are cu*ts. They are just doing their job.

A $500 dollar fine for that kind of offence is hardly fair. $250 i feel would be far more reasonable.

You are more than welcome to come, as long as you dont scratch that awesome paint job that top bloke did for you. :P

I am off work but Steph is still working & my daughter is going up to her Grandparents after Christmas.
Then im free....free i says....

Oh yeah, that fine is still to high for the crime.
