Mel in the most literal sense throw your leg over and have a good ride of as many bikes as you can in then your heart will rule and you will make a compromise but it will be your compromise and that is one of the best things about riding a bike it comes to your own personal desires :D Have fun choosing ( I know you really want a Rex go on admit it  )

FWIW, I have ridden all the bikes you speak of - and yeah they are all good. In fact they dont make many bad bikes these days.
Yeh, and Mel obviously thought it was great too, judging by the comments. And it's Mel's opinion that matters most, I'm not buying it for myself, neither are you.
In regards to the 2009 R1, I think just about everybody thinks it is great.

I'm not trying to prove anything, but I think it goes without saying that anything 10 years newer and with 100K less on the clock will be a lot better.

Aren't you lucky, you've ridden them all, I wish I was in your shoes. And you'd obviously know a shit load more than me about bikes, so in your opinion what's wrong with the K5 or the 09 R1? Or the suggestion to pickup either of them, if Mel enjoyed the ride on them?

Nothing - just not my cup of tea. Not me buying the bike though, which you correctly point out. BUT you told her (in you OP) to go and buy an R1, we suggested that she should ride them all ;) and make up her own mind.....isnt that what you now telling me

So it would appear that we are now on the same page.........Thats all.

What i'm saying is there is more to buying a bike cause its good. Lots of other things go into making an informed decision...yes its a good bike - everyone is telling you so - so they must be. BUT does it do the little things that really make the difference and put that smmile on your dial.

BTW, I dont ever remembering telling Mel to do anything other than go and ride everthing - or said any bike was better/worse/faster/lighter etc

I have offered it to her for a ride, but i think the wind will be a little too much for Mel....

Offer still stands Mel, but i have the feeling that it will turn you off Naked bikes. Loads of grunt, not bad handling but the wind, im not to sure for you????

Aaah that is why they made the ZRX1200S ;) for those that desire more wind protection on those long distance jaunts ;) :kuda:

Yeh, my OP was in direct response to Mel's OP which only made mention of the K5 and an older model R1. With the choice being between those two bikes, I said the K5, unless you had the doe to get the 09 R1. My suggestion wasn't in response to what litre bike should I get, but to the choice between a K5 and an older R1. If someone simply asked, what 1000cc bike should I get, I'd say the same thing you did, ride everything and go from there.

I'm assuming Mel too knows a lot about bikes and has or will ride the different options in upgrading from the current bike, as you would before making a purchase. And I assumed that so far the choices are the K5 or this older R1, as said in the OP.

I would assume that, unless you're an actually track rider/racer, the difference between all current/new model litre bikes is not noticeable to the normal rider. Comfort and aesthetics would probably be the major influencing factors in the final decision. The difference in power/torque, handling, braking, etc wouldn't be significant enough for the everyday rider to notice, I'm guessing. But you'd know more about that than me.

You didn't say anything different than go and ride everything. Which is the generic response to the everyday question, what litre bike should I get? But that wasn't the question put forth in the OP.

Mel, I just think you're lucky to be able to test ride all those bikes and not have the height issues some of us have :( ...

As others have said, test ride as much as you can and in the mean time, you still have your 9, so it's a win-win situation! ;)

Good luck and have fun in your search! :D

Buy what you want, whatever feels best, and enjoy the ride :D
