you dont have to get a shoei xr1000 for 900, if a shoei fits you can get the TZ1 they are basically the same helmet and about 500 i think!
also helmet warehouse have xr1000 which normall RRP between 800-900 down at 650.. and that is cheap! Dam i am thinking of getting another one!!!

The TZ I got retailed for $700 but got it for 500.
Price isn't as important as comfort I reckon

I tried every brand they had in the shop and bought the one that fit my head to best.
I think it was a large...what does that say about me?

Large helmet just says you have a large melon, that's all. I taught a kid at a previous school who's nickname was pumpkin. You can guess what the shape of his head was can't you? The first time I heard the other kids in the class call him it I laughed out loud and it was in the middle of me teaching a lesson.

All the different brands have different shapes. You will hear people that have been around a while and tried a heap of different helmets on over the years, say that they have a Shoie head or an Arai head etc. Like Nicholas you need to go somewhere that has a huge stock of different lids and try all of the brands and different sizes on to get the best one for your shaped head. If you have to go to different shops to get enough variety, then it is a small price to pay for avoiding buying an ill fitting helmet. Just make shore you avoid the plastic ones.
BTW, I'm happy to spend the money on a Shoie. They fit my head and can be trusted to do its job.

Re: picking a helmet
I had a CMS helmet when I first got back into riding, complete mangled shit I think it stands for, had the seatbelt clip style fastener, next helmet I bought I wanted one with D rings, that way when you fasten it it stays fastened, Shoei was the brand of choice, paid $450 for it, just bought another one now, another Shoei, that one cost me $600, i'm comfy with Shoei, quiet lid, good fit, good name.
Plenty of other options about, OGK, AGV, are a couple more options, Nolan aren't bad but the flip faces are fairly noisy.

Re: picking a helmet
Yep, different brands suit different shaped heads (dunno about pumpkin shaped though) I used to only use Shoei because they seemed to fit me like a glove (err... a head glove?) but these days Shoeis don't feel right, so either my scone or Shoei lids have changed shape.
I scored an AGV Rossi lid recently from Crime Convertors, brand new in the box, never worn, with the tags, stickers, visor film, etc still on for less than $200 & I now know I'm an AGV shaped head, it's an absolutely perfect fit & the lightest & quietest helmet I've ever owned too.
The moral of the story (as Nelso said) is to try on as many lids as you can get your hands on, the one that fits your head shape best will feel like home when you put it on.
Also, a $1200 helmet will not give you 4 times more protection than a $300 one so spend your $$ wisely.
