Hello All
I just bought myself a Ninja ZX636 (03) from a private seller.
Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in S.E suburbs of Melbourne, for it's first service...?
Or will it be easy enough to service myself on a saturday and learn while I go?
Any help is appreciated
Cheers

Re: The First Service
first service is pretty much just an oil change mate. no use spending 80 dollars an hour for work you can easily do yourself. get a manual and start cracking.

I dont think he means the bikes first service as its an 03, I think he means for the first service since he has owned the bike.csgup1 wrote:first service is pretty much just an oil change mate. no use spending 80 dollars an hour for work you can easily do yourself. get a manual and start cracking.
(If its really the bikes first service, then I'd be worried).
But yeah you could just do it yourself, as unless you want everything checked over (depending on how many km are the bike) just an oil & filter change is pretty simple.

If you are looking for someone in the Southeast, I'd either go to Mick Bub at Brighton or I think one of our sponsors might still be Mornington Kawasaki, who I have heard goo things about.
As for servcing the bike yourself, it will depend on what service is due and what level of common sense or level of mechanical knowledge you already have.
If it is a minor service, it's simple enough for any average human being to perform. Warm up the engine, allow 15 minutes for the oil to settle, remove sump plug and drain the oil, remove oil filter and replace. Refit sump plug and refill with oil to the required level. (Top of sight glass when bike is upright) Check and adjust chain, lube cables, adjust slack in cables, check steering head and wheel bearings, check for oil leaks or loose nuts/bolts, adjust tyre pressures, wash and dry! Simple. It takes me about 30 mins from start to finish to do an oil and filter change and a general check over. If doing it for the first time, it might take you an hour.
If it is a major service requiring a valve clearance check, then unless you really are mechanically handy, take it to a bike shop! It has underbucket shims which require camshaft removal and reinstallation if shims require changing.
All that reminds me that my Rex's throttle cable has a little too much slack (I like it slack, but I think I am missing half a turn!!), so I'm off to do that while I think of it!!!

Re: The First Service
I went and adjusted my throttle cable then and there so I wouldn't forget. But now I have an overwhelming urge to go for a ride!!!!
I feel like saying Fuck work and hitting the hills. But, thankfully, even though it's sunny outside, it's only 15 degrees, so the urge can be resisted! Had it been Sunny and 25, well.....that's a different story!
