GPZ 750 Starter Motors

Hi All, anyone had problems with a starter motor slipping? on a gpz 750 air cooled '85. Any thoughts, its done 50,000kms on the original. Can they be rebuilt? Cheers

I will let you all know how I go, currently have the starter motor itself being rebuilt at local auto elec. I also realise that there is the starter button, the soleniod / switch, the relay all in the circuit also, but they seem to be fine.

Should be OK at that mileage. More likely starter clutch which is a pain in the arse to fix! Starter can be rebuilt easily too.

My 1980 Z 7fiddy is doing the same thing....

I have 80k on the clock tho! Takes a bit to start. Ill be keen to know how much it costs to replace!

Depends on a) the mechanic and b) finding the part.
The last starter clutch I did, I had to settle for a 2nd hand one. Big mistake. It only last a month and failed.
The new eingine I just dropped into Goose had just had the Starter clutch done. The guy said it was 'around' $200 for the part.
In theory the procedure for replacing it requires you to split the cases and pull the gearbox apart.
However a local mechanic here (Terry Kirk) has managed to perfect the following nack:
Essentially you can drop the sump, hold your arm in place, holding all the cogs etc in place. Quickly slide out the main shaft, swap the starter clutch with a new one, and slide the shaft back in.
I dont know the exact specifics, however he has done it many time, including on Goose.

Hey Lurch, so the starter clutch - is that attached to the larger starter ring inside the casing, the one that meshes with gear on the starter itself? Where is the starter clutch is what i am trying to say
